Cole Apeldorn of Southampton battled a chilly drizzle to card a 3-over-par 73, easily the best round of the day at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point, N.J. to claim a victory in the 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Sunday.
Apeldorn got off to a fast start with a birdie at the first hole and added two more in his round as he picked up his second win of the wraparound 2020-2021 season.
Rocco Sanfelice of Woolwich, N.J. and Riley Mostecki of Linwood, N.J. shared runnerup honors as each posted a 76, three shots behind Appeldorn. Sanfelice’s steady round featured 13 pars while Mostecki had 10 pars on his scorecard. After several weekends of summerlike weather on the Junior Tour, the conditions had a more November-like feel Sunday.
Evan Goldberg, another Linwood, N.J. entry, and Joseph Fargnoli of Mickelton, N.J. finished in a tie for fourth place, each signing for an 80.
Central Bucks South’s Will Locovare took sixth place with an 83 and Joshua Murphy of Newtown Square rounded out the 16-to-18 field as he carded an 89 to finish alone in seventh place.
Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J. was the only player in the younger 13-to-15 field to break 80 as he finished atop the leaderboard with a 79 for his first victory of the 2020-’21 season. Forman had a string of four straight pars and had seven more pars on his scorecard in securing the win.
Kevin Zhang of Warren, N.J. birdied the par-3 third hole and had five pars on his scorecard as he earned runnerup honors with an 83. Tommy Marshall of Marlton, N.J. took third place with an 87 that included five pars.
P.J. Foley of Northfield, N.J. took fourth place with a 92, Ethan Legarda of Voorhees, N.J. was fifth with a 99 and A.J. Mulnar of Jamison was sixth with a 100.
Daniel Herzchel of Linwood, N.J. finished in seventh place with a 101, Gavin McClaskey of Williamstown, N.J. was eighth with a 107 and Matthew Daughtery, another Williamstown, N.J. entry, rounded out the 13-to-15 field as he ended up alone in ninth with a 114.
Sophia Chesner of Moorestown, N.J. had back-to-back pars on the 16th and 17th holes at Greate Bay to claim top honors in the girls 16-to-18 division with a 92. It was Chesner’s second win of the 2020-’21 season.
West Chester Rustin’s Mary Emma Guldi made a par on the par-3 13th hole as she registered a 94 to finish in second place with a 94, two shots behind Chesner.
Keller Tannehill of Margate, N.J. made pars to start and finish his round and four other pars on his scorecard as he bested the field of nine-holers with an 8-over 43.
It was a three-way tie for second place among Mia Martinez of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., Lily Kochersperger of Kennett Square and Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. as each carded a 46, three shots behind Tannehill.
Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J. took fifth place with a 49, Benjamin Mayer of Garnet Valley was sixth with a 50 and Nicholas Fargnoli, another entry from Team Fargnoli of Mickelton, N.J., and Declan Conner of Swarthmore shared seventh , each signing for a 52.
Jacob Shachar of Sewell, N.J. finished in ninth place with a 58 and Emma DiPatri of Franklinville, N.J. rounded out the coed 12-and-under field as she took 10th with a 69.
