Ashley Cassidy, a former Central Bucks East standout and a
senior at the University of Cincinnati, captured the Women’s Match Play
Championship at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale Friday with a
convincing win over Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia legend Ann
Laughlin.
The 21-year-old Cassidy, playing out of Commonwealth
National Golf Club, needed just 25 holes of the scheduled 36-hole final to
claim a 12 and 11 victory and etch her name on the Glenna Collett Vare Cup.
Laughlin, who plays out of Riverton Country Club, was
bidding for a record-tying 12th Philadelphia Women’s Amateur title.
But the veteran proved all week that she can still keep up with the youngsters,
first by qualifying for the Championship Flight and then by advancing to the
final.
The First Flight title went to another Commonwealth National
representative as Karen Siegel claimed a 6 and 5 victory over AK Frazier of
Gulph Mills Golf Club.
