Bob Beck of Lehigh Country Club put an exclamation point on
a Golf Association of Philadelphia Brewer Cup final at Overbrook Golf Club
Wednesday. The Brewer Cup is presented by Callaway Golf.
Beck couldn’t shake Christopher Clauson of LuLu Country Club
until his bunker shot from 25 yards away found the cup for a stunning birdie
that gave Beck the title on the 19th hole.
Beck had opened the match with three straight birdies to
take a 3-up lead. But Clauson shook off that early barrage and worked his way
back to even by winning the fourth, 10th and 11th holes
with birdies of his own.
Beck won the 14th with a par, Clauson evened it
again by winning the 15th with a par, Beck won the 16th
with a bogey, but Clauson forced the match into extra holes by winning the 17th
with a birdie.
But Beck’s hole-out from the bunker gave him his second
birdie of the match on Overbrook’s par-4 first hole and closed out Clauson.
Earlier in the day, Beck ousted his good friend, Kenneth
Phillips of Lancaster Country Club, 2 and 1, in a semifinal match. In the other
semifinal, Clauson claimed a 3 and 2 decision over Michael Vassil of the
Country Club of Scranton.
Robin McCool of Saucon Valley Country Club captured the
Super-Senior division with a 2 and 1 victory over Frank Polizzi of Whitemarsh
Valley Country Club.
McCool had cruised to a 5 and 3 win over Michael Anton of
Lookaway Golf Club in the semifinals earlier Wednesday. Polizzi reached the
final with a 3 and 2 victory over Daniel Burton of Lancaster Country Club.
Tournament namesake O. Gordon Brewer, a veteran of 42 USGA
championships, including two U.S. Senior Amateur titles, was on hand to present
the trophies to Beck and McCool.
