Trebor Melendez, the talented youngster from Vineland, N.J., made a couple of forays into the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit this summer, but was able to represent the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour in the 20th Under Armour Jon M. Pritsch Memorial Cup, a series of Ryder Cup-style matches against top players from the New Jersey Section PGA Junior Tour.
The matches were held Aug. 21 at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, N.J. The New Jersey Junior Tour kids ran their win streak in the series to nine straight with an 11-7 victory over the top players from the Philly Junior Tour.
The two teams were made up of the top 10 point-getters from their respective tour’s current season with two wild-card selections rounding out each team.
The Philly Junior Tour got individual wins from Melendez, Quinn Gallagher, a Bryn Mawr resident and a senior on the golf team at The Haverford School, Helmut Dang of Newtown Square and Jack Gilbert, another Bryn Mawr guy.
Melendez, Dang and Gilbert also helped the Philly Junior Tour pick up three points in the simultaneous four-ball matches. The teams deadlocked at 3-3 in the four-ball matches with the New Jersey Junior Tour going 8-4 in the 12 singles matches.
Melendez claimed a 3 and 1 decision over the New Jersey Junior Tour’s Graydon Dziadzio and then Melendez teamed with Wissahickon senior Ty Sheftic, a District One Class AAA qualifier a year ago, to earn a 2 and 1 victory over Dziadzio and Justin Peck in their four-ball match.
Dang rolled to a 6 and 5 verdict over Sean Curtis and then Dang teamed with Preston Minio of Lansdale to capture a 2 and 1 win over Curtis and Neil Parikh in their four-ball match.

Gallagher picked up the fourth point for the Philly Junior Tour in the singles matches with a 1-up victory over Tyler Whitney.
Whitney and Ethan DiPetrillo teamed up for the New Jersey Junior Tour to claim a 2-up victory over Gallagher and Avon Grove senior Shane Cornell, a District One Class AAA qualifier a year ago.
DiPetrillo edged Cornell, 2 and 1, in their singles match.
The New Jersey Junior Tour got strong performances at the top of its lineup as Sohan Madane and Axel Brandes accounted for three points, each claiming singles victories and rolling to a four-ball victory.
Madane cruised to a 4 and 3 victory over Billy Nikolaidis, a junior on the Muhlenberg golf team, and Brandes rolled to a 6 and 5 decision over Ravi Gohel of Mount Laurel, N.J.
Madane and Brandes then teamed up for a 4 and 3 victory over Nikolaidis and Gohel in their four-ball match. Nikolaidis and Gohel had been two of the hottest players on the Philly Junior Tour this summer.
The New Jersey Junior Tour also got singles wins from Peck, who pulled out a 2-up verdict over Sheftic, Parikh, who earned a 3 and 2 victory over Minio, and Sharief, who claimed a 4 and 2 win over Campbell.
It was a dominant showing for the two girls on the New Jersey Junior Tour side as Sophia Mysliwiec and Savannah Laverty swept their singles matches and won their four-ball match.
Mysliwiec cruised to a 6 and 5 victory over Raegan Young of Middletown and Laverty of Moorestown, N.J. rolled to a 5 and 4 win over Cardinal O’Hara junior Alaina Carson, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier in each of her first two seasons of scholastic golf.
