The Peters Township girls repeated as the PIAA Class AAA team champion in a dramatic four-hole playoff with District Three champion Manheim Township while District One champion Downingtown West took third place Wednesday at Penn State’s White Course.
Peters Township junior Ellie Benson, coming off a tie for seventh place in the PIAA Class AAA individual competition, which concluded Tuesday, had suffered a triple bogey on the final hole of regulation that enabled Manheim Township to catch the Indians, each team landing on 11-over-par 227.
Benson, however, redeemed herself by draining a six-foot birdie putt on the fourth hole of the playoff to give Peters Township its second straight state team crown.
Benson, the WPIAL individual champion, had carded a 3-over 75 in regulation to lead the way for Peters Township.
Sophia Severns and Brooke Vowcheck backed up Benson for Peters Township as each posted a 76. Vowcheck had to hole a 12-foot birdie putt to get the Indians into the playoff. No pressure there.
Rounding out the lineup for Peters Township were Betty Glyptis, who recorded an 84 and Gabby Catalogna with a 91.
The three counters for Peters Township and Manheim Township competed in the playoff with Severns and Vowcheck in a foursome with the Blue Streaks’ Paisley Kappasser and Sonia Dumasia with Benson and Piper Smith, two of the best scholastic players in the state, trailing in a twosome.
Smith, who joined Benson in the trio tied for seventh place in the Class AAA individual competition, led the way for Manheim Township with a 1-under 71, the best individual score on another unseasonably warm late October day, in regulation.
Downingtown West, representing the Ches-Mont League, finished 10 shots behind the playoff participants in third place with a 237 total.
Malania Druffner led the way for the Whippets with a 3-over 75. Rachel Schuda backed up Druffner with a 78 and Emma Lewis was the final counter for Downingtown West with a 79.
Rounding out the Downingtown West lineup were Macyn Linsley, who tallied an 88 and Reagan McGruther with a 92.
Downingtown West’s third-place finish capped a tremendous season for the Whippets, who captured the District One Class AAA team crown last week at Raven’s Claw Golf Club and saw Druffner and Lewis qualify for the state tournament as individuals.
There had been talk at the District One Championship at Turtle Creek Golf Course that district runnerup Conestoga might get a wild-card spot in the PIAA Class AAA team competition. There had been such talk in past years, but a spot in the state team championship had never really materialized for the District One runnerup.
But the Pioneers did indeed get the call and proved they belonged by finishing six shots behind Downingtown West in fourth place Wednesday.
Conestoga was led by sophomore Corinne McReynolds, who carded a solid 1-over 73. Jill Burks, also a sophomore, backed up McReynolds with a 78. Suri Ahn was the final counter for the Pioneers with an 82.
Rounding out the Conestoga lineup were Nicolette Bottos, who registered an 85 and Mimi Kambayashi with a 92.
Much like Downingtown West, pretty strong season for Conestoga. Burks was the medalist at the Central League Championship and finished in a tie for third place in the District One Class AAA Championship. I’m sure Burks was disappointed with her 20th-place finish in the PIAA Class AAA individual championship, but she got there.
Led by a sparkling 4-under 68 from junior Ravi Desai, North Allegheny claimed a state championship in the Class AAA boys competition with a 2-under 286 total at the White Course.

Backing up Desai was Christopher Hoffman, who contributed a solid 2-under 70. Preston Troiano matched par with a 72 for the Tigers and Liam Cooper was their final counter with a 4-over 76. Rounding out the North Allegheny lineup was Colin Ward, who posted a 79.
South Fayette finished four shots behind North Allegheny in second place with a 2-over 290 total. State College, playing close to home, was a shot behind South Fayette in third place with a 3-over 291 total.
Abington Heights finished three shots behind State College in fourth place with a 6-over 294.
District One champion West Chester Rustin, out of the Ches-Mont League, shared fifth place with Central York, each landing on 9-over 297, three shots behind Abington Heights.
Sam Feeney and Anesti Kalderemtzis led the way for the Knights, each matching par with a 72.
Backing up Feeney and Kalderemtzis was Cole Berry, who posted a solid 3-over 75. Nathan Mansueto provided the final counter for the Knights with a 6-over 78. Rounding out the West Chester Rustin lineup was Nick Linkchorst, who signed for an 80.
Catholic League and District 12 champion La Salle was another seven shots behind West Chester Rustin and Central York in seventh place with a 16-over 304 total.
The Explorers were led by Ian Natale, who matched par with a 72. Chris Vahey, coming off a tie for ninth place in the PIAA Class AAA individual competition, added a 1-over 73.
Diego Yanez chipped in with a 7-over 79 and La Salle had its pick from either of the 80s delivered by Tristan Smith and Nolan Corcoran for its final counter.
Scranton Prep, led by a 1-under 71 from Ben Boyanosky, captured the PIAA Class AA boys team crown with an 8-over 296 total at Penn State’s Blue Course.
Brendan Bell and Cole Powell backed up Boyanosky as each recorded a solid 2-over 74. The final counter for Scranton Prep came from Jack Pavuk, who registered a 77. Rounding out the Scranton Prep lineup was Ben Walsh, who tallied an 83.
Cathedral Prep, out of Erie, was the runnerup, finishing nine shots behind Scranton Prep with a 17-over 305 total.
Defending state champion Devon Prep, winner of the District 12 Class AA team crown, finished five shots behind Cathedral Prep in third place with a 22-over 310 total.
John Curran capped a big week for the Tide as he led them with a solid 2-over 74. Curran finished in a tie for second place in the PIAA Class AA individual competition, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Blue Course.
Backing up Curran was Scott Cunningham, who carded a 4-over 76. Andrew Carroccio chipped in with a 79.
Devon Prep, representing the Catholic League, could take its pick from either of the 81s turned in by Dan Dowling and Chris Puliano for its final counter.
Fairview ended Hickory’s three-year reign as the queens of the PIAA Class AA girls team competition as the Tigers captured the title with an 18-over 234 total at Penn State’s Blue Course.
Fairview was led by junior Cora Hirz, who posted a solid 4-over 76. Hirz had finished in fifth place in the PIAA Class AA individual competition, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Blue Course.
Moira Erhartic backed up Hirz with a 77 and the final counter for the Tigers came from Meredith Thompson, who recorded an 81.
Rounding out the lineup for Fairview were Abby Benz, who signed for an 83, and another member of Team Benz, Izzy Benz, who had an 88.
Tunkhannock was 20 shots behind Fairview in second place with a 254 total and three-time defending champion Hickory was three shots behind Tunkhannock in third with a 257 total.
Shady Side Academy ended up in fourth place with a 273 total, 16 shots behind Hickory.
