Seniors J.P. Hoban and Harrison Brown and junior Sean Curran each carded a solid 1-over-par 37 to lead The Haverford School to a one-shot victory over Malvern Prep in the Germantown Academy Invitational at Bluestone Country Club Tuesday as the Fords took control of the race in their bid for a second straight Inter-Ac League crown.
A third Haverford School senior, Gregor Weissenberger, winner of the Bert Linton Invitational for the Inter-Ac’s individual championship a year ago at Aronimink Golf Club, and junior William Forman each contributed a 2-over 38 over Bluestone’s par-36 front nine to enable the Fords to finish with a 187 total.
It is that kind of balance that has Haverford School on the brink of repeating as the Inter-Ac champion.
Malvern Prep, behind a sparkling 1-under 35 from senior Michael Henry, the day’s individual medalist, finished a shot behind Haverford School with a 188 total.
The 5-0 day in the fifth of the Inter-Ac’s six invitationals that comprise its regular season gave the Fords a 22-3 mark heading into the last of the six invitationals hosted by Malvern Prep at Waynesborough Country Club Wednesday.
Episcopal Academy, which finished in third place Tuesday at Bluestone with a 203 total, sits in second place in the Inter-Ac standings with a 20-5 mark. Malvern Prep was in third place with an 18-7 record.
That gives Haverford School a nice cushion heading into the final invitational at Waynesborough. A year ago, the Fords finished in third place in the final invitational of the season that they hosted at French Creek Golf Club, but had enough of a lead going into that final invitational that they were still able to capture the Inter-Ac championship.
Curran will take a narrow two-point lead over Hoban into the final invitational at Waynesborough in the battle for the top spot in the regular-season individual points race. Curran, the co-medalist in the Penn Charter Invitational at The 1912 Club, has piled up 424 points with a 35.4 scoring average. Hoban, the medalist in the Episcopal Academy Invitational at Merion Golf Club’s West Course, has earned 422 points and has scoring average of 35.6.
Episcopal Academy sophomore Freddy Hartmann is in third place in the race to be the Inter-Ac’s champion golfer of the year with 416 points and a scoring average of 35.6. Hartmann was the medalist in the season opening Haverford School Invitational at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
Henry made birdies on the first and seventh holes in claiming individual medalist honors at Bluestone with his 1-under round. Henry was the runnerup to Weissenberger in the Bert Linton Invitational at Aronimink a year ago.
Senior co-captain Brody Bell backed up Henry as Bell made birdies at the first, fourth and fifth holes while matching par with a 36. Senior Eamon Cochran made a birdie on the first hole and an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole as he registered a solid 2-over 38.
Sophomore Colby Komancheck also opened his round with a birdie at the first hole and finished with a 3-over 39. Rounding out the counters for the Friars was junior Pat Duda, who made a birdie at the fourth hole on his way to a 4-over 40.
Hartmann led the way for a young Episcopal Academy team at Bluestone as he tallied a 3-over 39. Carson Jakuc, like Hartmann a sophomore, added a 4-over 40.
Junior co-captain Jimmy Warmkessel and junior Parker Smith each registered a 41 and sophomore Liam Crowley rounded out the counters for the Churchmen as he carded a 42.
Penn Charter finished a shot behind Episcopal Academy in fourth place at Bluestone with a 204 total, invitational host Germantown Academy was fifth with a 213 total and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy finished sixth with a 220 total.
Penn Charter was in fourth place in the overall standings with a 10-15 mark following the invitational at Bluestone, Germantown Academy was fifth at 5-20 and Springside Chestnut Hill remained winless in sixth at 0-25.
