More firsts for Parrish as he completes weekend sweep with Philly Junior Tour victory at RiverWinds

Christopher Parrish of Woolwich Township, N.J. capped a really strong September on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour as he completed his second weekend sweep of the month by carding a 1-under-par 71 at the RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club in West Deptford, N.J. Sept. 29th that gave him the top spot in the 16-to-18 division.

The Philly Junior Tour stop at RiverWinds was another Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) event, which offers points that can earn players status on some of the higher-profile junior circuits, most notably the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).

The Philly Junior Tour broke out its usual 13-to-15 and 16-to-18 divisions for the boys, so I’ll wrap up those divisions while referring to the overall JGS scoring for players ages 13-to-18.

Parrish made birdies on the second, fifth, eighth and 11th holes and had 11 pars on his scorecard, including six straight pars from the 12th through the 17th holes. He was the only player to finish under par for the day while finishing in first place in the overall 13-to-18 scoring.

Parrish had finished at the top of the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division a day earlier when he matched par with a 72 at Running Deer Golf Club, although he had to settle for a runnerup honors in the overall standings, a shot behind Trebor Melendez of Vineland, N.J.

In early September, Parrish had swept to back-to-back victories in the 16-to-18 division at Odessa National Golf Club and Garrisons Lake Golf Club in a Delaware weekend for the Philly Junior Tour.

Michael Links of Swedesboro, N.J. made a birdie on the 10th hole and had 12 pars on his card as he finished three shots behind Parrish in second place in the 16-to-18 division while taking third in the overall standings behind Ryan Sun of Morganville, N.J., the winner of the 13-to-15 division.

Chase Mitchell of Medford, N.J. and Devin Carpenter of Philadelphia shared third place among the older guys and finished in a tie for fifth in the overall scoring with Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. from the 13-to-15 division as all three landed on 6-over 78.

Mitchell made a birdie on the 16th hole and had 12 pars on his card. Carpenter made birdies on the 12th and 14th holes and had 11 pars on his card, including a string of six straight pars from the third through the eighth holes.

Vaughn Soltys of Linwood, N.J. took fifth place in the 16-to-18 division and shared eighth with Henry Sokol of Villanova from the 13-to-15 division in the overall standings as both signed for a 79.

Eric Coombs of North Cape May, N.J. and Chase Adomaitis of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. were the last two players in the 16-to-18 division to crack the top 10 in the overall standings as they finished in a tie for sixth place in the division and in a tie for 10th overall with Jack Sokol, Henry Sokol’s twin brother, and Jack Yantosh of Glen Mills from the 13-to-15 division, all four posting an 80.

Ethan Barroway of Cherry Hill, N.J. and Jake Benner of Harleysville finished in a tie for eighth place, each signing for an 81, and Tyler Kulik of Mount Royal, N.J. and Joshua Kriegel of Lawrenceville, N.J. rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as they ended up in a tie for 10th, each recording an 84.

Sun of Morganville, N.J. bookended his round with birdies at the first and 18th holes and had 13 pars on his scorecard, including a string of five straight pars from the 13th through the 17th holes, as he finished at the top of the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division and was the runnerup to Parrish in the overall scoring with a solid 1-over 73.

It was another strong showing for Melendez of Vineland, N.J. as he made birdies on the fourth, 12th and 16th holes and had 10 pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors in the 13-to-15 division and was fourth in the overall scoring with a 5-over 77.

A day earlier at Running Deer, Melendez had been the overall winner and topped the field in the 13-to-15 division. Melendez had matched Parrish’s feat earlier in the month during the Philly Junior Tour’s weekend swing through Delaware as he swept to wins in the 13-to-15 division at both Odessa National and Garrisons Lake.

Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. opened his round at RiverWinds with an eagle at the par-5 first hole, added a birdie at 10 and had eight pars on his card as he finished a shot behind Melendez in third place in the 13-to-15 division and ended up in a tie for fifth in the overall standings with Mitchell and Carpenter from the 16-to-18 division with a 6-over 78.

Villanova’s Sokol twins, Henry and Jack, and Yantosh of Glen Mills were the last three players from the younger 13-to-15 division to crack the top 10 in the overall scoring.

Henry Sokol registered a 79 to finish alone in fourth place among the younger guys and in a tie for eighth overall with Soltys from the 16-to-18 division.

Jack Sokol and Yantosh each posted an 80 to share fifth place in the 13-to-15 division and were part of a four-way logjam tied for 10th in the overall standings with Coombs and Adomaitis from the 16-to-18 division.

Wil Simonson of Haddonfield, N.J. took seventh place in the 13-to-15 division with an 81, Bradford Bergstrom of Moorestown, N.J. was eighth with an 82 and Evan Hahn of Berlin, N.J. was ninth with an 84.

Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division was a trio of players tied for 10th place at 86 that included Beck Rosenthal of Ambler, Jack Lobley of Gladwyne and Ethan Yip of Marlboro, N.J.

Only three girls teed it up at RiverWinds, all in the 13-to-15 division, but it was a tight battle among the three.

Emily Maurer of Mount Laurel, N.J. claimed the Philly Junior Tour victory as she opened her round with an eagle at the par-5 first hole and had 12 pars on her scorecard, including a run of five straight pars from the second through the sixth holes, on her way to a 3-over 75.

Archmere Academy sophomore Hannah Webb of Woolwich, N.J. made a birdie on the second hole and had 10 pars on her card as she finished four shots behind Maurer in second place with a 79.

Webb helped Archmere claim the team crown in the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) Championship last spring and was the top finisher among the girls in the Junior Tour Championship in August at Chester Valley Golf Club.

Rylee Delaney, playing close to her West Deptford, N.J. home, had nine pars on her card as she finished two shots behind Webb in third place with a solid 81.

It was also a weekend sweep among the nine-holers as Aiden Jose of Brick, N.J. had four pars on his scorecard to best the field in the coed 12-and-under division with a 5-over 41. A day earlier, Jose had picked up a Philly Junior Tour win by finishing at the top of the leaderboard among the nine-holers at Running Deer.

The trio of Patrick Thomas of Hockessin, Del., Smith Rawes of Elkins Park and Samuel Karas of Blue Bell shared runnerup honors as each finished  a shot behind Jose with a 6-over 42.

Thomas had five pars on his card, Rawes made a birdie on the second hole and a par at six and Karas made a birdie at three and had three pars on his card.

Grayson McCann of Downingtown and Damien Dollard of Cinnaminson, N.J. shared fifth place, each posting a 44, Alex Cheng of Wilmington, Del. was seventh with a 45 and Matthew Bowman of Newtown was eighth with a 46.

Charlie Sears of Wilmington, Del. and Victor Wang, another Hockessin, Del. entry, rounded out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division as they finished in a tie for ninth place, each signing for a 47.
