The Inter-Ac League has been the domain of The Haverford School and Malvern Prep with Episcopal Academy sneaking a championship in there in 2016.
Pretty sure since the Inter-Ac switched its schedule to the fall and adopted the format in which six invitational mini-tournaments are contested to determine the league title, the Fords, the Friars and the Churchmen have won all of the team crowns in the invitationals with the exception of a Penn Charter victory in the season opener in 2017.
At least that was the case until Tuesday. Germantown Academy had shown signs that it might be ready to contend for an Inter-Ac crown when the Patriots had a couple of runnerup finishes in 2019 when The Haverford School went on to claim its third straight league title.
Germantown Academy hosted the first Inter-Ac invitational in nearly two years Tuesday at Bluestone Country Club and the Patriots, behind a 1-under-par 35 from sophomore Ajeet Bagga, got the jump on the rest of the league with a 194 total that was five shots better than Malvern Prep.
Some teams played a limited schedule in 2020 with the coronavirus pandemic still creating havoc with schools and scholastic sports, but there was no league champion crowned in the Inter-Ac.
Bagga’s 35 enabled him to share individual medalist honors for the day with Malvern Prep senior Keller Mulhern, who matched Bagga’s 1-under round.
Will Irons posted a 2-over 38 to back up Bagga. Senior Jack Luviano and junior Charlie Ota each registered a 4-over 40 and senior Alex Covington provided the final counter for the Patriots with a 41. Up to eight players can tee it up for each team with the top five scores counting.
Junior Dylan O’Connor backed up Mulhern for Malvern Prep with a 3-over 39. Eighth-grader Davis Conaway, the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Junior-Junior Championship winner this summer, chipped in with a 40.
Sophomore Marshall Kain signed for a 42 and senior co-captain Jack Davis was the final counter for the Friars with a 43.
Episcopal Academy, behind a 38 by Jack Yearley and a 39 by Hunter Stetson, both sophomores, finished eight shots behind Malvern Prep in third place with a 207 total.
Senior co-captain Eric Morgan and sophomore Jack Logan each signed for a 43 for the Churchmen and sophomore Jack Crowley had the final counter with a 44.
Haverford School, which won the last three Inter-Ac crowns in 2017, 2018 and 2019, was six shots behind Episcopal Academy in fourthplace with a 213 total.
Penn Charter finished fifth with a 219 total and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy was sixth at 233.
