Behind another strong round by sophomore Ajeet Bagga, Germantown Academy swept through a second Inter-Ac League invitational Tuesday, this one hosted by The Haverford School at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
Bagga fired a 2-under-par 33 to claim individual medalist honors for the second time in as many Inter-Ac invitational starts. That led Germantown Academy to a strong 181 team score that was eight shots better than runnerup Episcopal Academy.
Junior Charley Ota backed up Ajeet Bagga with a 1-over 36. Senior Luke Marvin, returning to the scene of his victory in the Bert Linton Memorial Inter-Ac League individual championship victory in 2019, and junior Serena Bagga each posted a 37.
The final counter for the Patriots came from senior Seth Roth, who carded a solid 3-over 38.
With sweeps of the first two invitationals, Germantown Academy sits atop the Inter-Ac standings with a 10-0 record. Episcopal Academy and Malvern Prep are tied for second place, each coming in at 7-3. Perennial Inter-Ac power Haverford School is in unfamiliar territory in fourth place with a 4-6 mark followed by Penn Charter in fifth with a 2-8 record and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in sixth at 0-10.
Haverford School won the Inter-Ac title the last three times the league played in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Coronavirus concerns prevented the Inter-Ac from playing its schedule in 2020.
Anybody who follows the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour, and this blog most definitely does, watched Ajeet Bagga and big sister Serena just keep getting better and better in the last four or five years, so their success isn’t all that surprising.
Episcopal Academy was led by two members of its strong sophomore class as Jack Yearley and Jack Logan each registered a 2-over 37. The Churchmen posted a solid 189, but it wasn’t good enough to overtake Germantown Academy.
Malvern Prep was four shots behind EA in third place with a 193 total. The Friars were led by two of their seniors, Keller Mulhern and Jack Davis, both of whom signed for a 3-over 38.
Senior Joey Vandergeest, junior Will Aprahamian and eighth-grader Davis Conoway backed up Mulhern and Davis as each posted a solid 4-over 39.
Haverford School was just a shot behind Malvern Prep in fourth place with a 194 total. Penn Charter finished in fifth place with a 213 total and Springside Chestnut Hill was sixth with a 239 total.
Malvern Prep traveled to Whitemarsh Valley Country Club Wednesday for a nonleague dual match with Catholic League power La Salle and the Friars fell to the Explorers by a 195-206 count. Mulhern had the best round of the day for Malvern Prep as he registered a solid 1-over 36.
