Calen Sanderson of Skillman, N.J. was the picture of
consistency on his way to a 1-over-par 73 that gave him a victory in the
16-to-18 division in the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s Philly PGA
Central Counties Chapter Junior Championship at the Pine Meadows Golf Complex
in Lebanon Sunday.
Sanderson birdied the second hole on the 6,319-yard, par-72
Pine Meadows layout and then held on stubbornly to his lead by making pars on
the final 11 holes, starting with No. 8. The day turned cool and cloudy, more
like what early spring would have felt like had we actually had early spring
this year.
Although the event was played in Lebanon, Sanderson had to
hold off a fellow Jersey guy, Matthew Hanzel of Sewell, for the victory. Hanzel
had five birdies to finish a shot behind Sanderson at 2-over 74. Shaun Fedor of
Lancaster was another shot behind Hanzel in third with a 3-over 75.
Brock Fassnacht, the Warwick junior who claimed the PIAA
Class AAA East Regional title last fall at Golden Oaks Golf Club, headed a foursome
of players tied for fourth at 4-over 76.
Joining Fassnacht in the group tied for fourth were Tyler
Wassell of Lancaster, John Wang of Wilmington, Del. and Ryan Woelfling of
Myerstown.
Ryan D’Ariano of West Chester finished eighth with a 77, Matthew
Fleming of Richboro was ninth with a 78 and Jeremy Harper of Mountain Top
rounded out the top 10 with a 79.
Jack Tarzy of Medford, N.J. had three birdies as he matched
Sanderson’s 1-over 73 to take top honors in the 13-to-15 division. Darren Nolan
of Glenside had three birdies in a front nine of 1-under 35 on his way to a
2-over 74 that earned him runnerup honors.
Benjamin Saggers of West Chester had two birdies on his way
to a 78 that left him alone in third place. Jon Lee of York finished fourth with
a 79.
Stephen Butler of Telford and Jackson Debusschere of
Wallingford shared fifth place, each posting an 80. Spring-Ford freshman Luke
Watson, Jack Ross of Medford Lakes, N.J. and Derek McGlaughlin of Elizabethtown
were another shot behind Butler and Debusschere in a tie for seventh at 81.
Jake Shmonov of Harrisburg rounded out the top 10 with an
82.
Christina Carroll of Bear, Del. has been playing some solid
golf this spring and that trend continued as she had three birdies on the front
nine on her way to a 3-over 75 that gave the top spot in the girls 16-to-18
division.
Central York senior Julianne Lee, who finished in a tie for
11th in the PIAA Class AAA Championship at the Heritage Hills Golf
Resort last fall, was the runnerup with an 82. Lee’s round was highlighted by a
birdie at the fourth. Pretty sure that’s little brother Jon who finished fourth
in the boys 13-to-15 division.
Casey Oppenheimer of Conshohocken birdied the 10th
hole on her way to an 83 that gave her a third-place finish. Jessica McClellan
of Freeland took fourth and Holly Haber of Stevensville, Md. and McKylie
Boreman of New Cumberland shared fifth place, each carding an 89.
Kaylee Richards of State College finished seventh with a 92,
Anna McCormick of Harrisburg was eighth with a 96, Peyton Kraras of Wyomissing
was ninth with a 97 and Marple Newtown senior Gillyoung Koh rounded out the top
10 with a 103.
Victoria Kim of West Chester birdied three of the first five
holes in a solid round of 79 that gave her top honors in the 13-to-15 division.
Eden Richmond of Princeton, N.J. birdied No. 7 on her way to runnerup honors
with an 82.
Paige Richter of Camp Hill finished up with a par on the 18th
hole as she took third place with an 84. Hannah Rabb of Watsontown took fourth
with an 87.
Riley Mulhern of Downingtown finished fifth with a 98,
Bethany Julias of Schwenksville was sixth with a 118 and Amelia Loninger of
Crosswick, N.J. was seventh with a 119.
Hunter Probst of Bear Creek was rock solid with six pars in
a 3-over 39 that left him atop the field of nine-holers. The quickly improving
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting and Michael Maslanka of Taylor shared
second place, each carding a 42.
John Keba of Emmaus finished fourth with a 43 followed by,
I’m guessing here, the Team Roberts sisters from Phoenixville, Kayley in fifth
with a 45 and Kate in sixth with a 50.
Samantha Loninger of the Crosswick, N.J. Loningers finished
seventh with a 51, Mason Tucker of York was eighth with a 52 and Alyse Miller
of Shavertown was ninth with a 56.
