I’ve got some catching
up to do with three local qualifiers for USGA championships held earlier this week
and the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour holding its Philadelphia Girls Junior
PGA Championship Thursday. But I think I’ll start with a Philadelphia Junior
PGA Championship qualifier that capped a busy week in Delaware for the Junior
Tour Wednesday and try to get to the results from the final day of the Golf
Association of Philadelphia’s Junior Boys’ Championship at Blue Bell Country
Club. What can I say? There’s no better way to celebrate the summer solstice
than by catching a late loop at Stonewall.
Haverford School sophomore Jake Maddaloni of Newtown Square
had the best score of the day in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour
Philadelphia Junior PGA Championship qualifier Wednesday with a 4-over-par 76 at
the Bayside Resort Golf Club in Selbyville, Del.
Maddaloni had two birdies in a back-nine 38 over the
6,289-yard, par-72 Bayside layout. His 76 gave him the top spot in the 13-to-15
division, but he also headed the overall list of nine players ages 13-to-18 who
earned a spot in the Philadelphia Junior PGA Championship, which will be held
July 9 at The Springhaven Club.
The top finishers at Springhaven will advance to the Boys
Junior PGA Championship, which will be held July 31 to Aug. 2 at Valhalla Golf
Club in Louisville, Ky.
Jolo Timothy Magcalayo of the Philippines was the runnerup
to Maddaloni in the 13-to-15 division and in the overall scoring with a 78.
Jeffrey Homer of Wilmington, Del. got the third berth out of the 13-to-15
division and was the final player out of the younger group to grab a ticket to
Springhaven with an 82. That left him tied for eighth in the overall scoring.
Garnet Valley junior Jacob Sokalsky, coming off a victory in
a Junior Tour stop Tuesday at Kings Crown Country Club, finished fourth in the
13-to-15 division with an 83. Another member of Team Homer from Wilmington,
Matthew Homer, and another Wilmington entry, Anthony Ciconte, finished tied for
fifth, each carding an 86.
Kendall Gordon of Burlington Township, N.J. finished seventh
with an 88, Stephen Cain of Yardley was eighth with a 98, Nathan Lutz of
Middletown, Del. was ninth with a 102 and Jacob Leon of Downingtown was 10th
with a 103.
Nicholas Covey of Easton, Md. won a scorecard playoff with
Christopher Vanhof of Georgetown, Del. after each posted a 79 to take the top
spot in the 16-to-18 division. Covey went 1-over in his final six holes with
five straight pars a bogey and his back-nine 39 gave him the tiebreaker edge.
The top six finishers in the 16-to-18 division, led by Covey
and Vanhof, earned tickets to Springhaven.
Nathan Potts of Wilmington, Del., Benton Stewart of Wyndmoor
and Tyler Wassell of Lancaster finished tied for third in the division, each
carding an 81. Bryan Donato of Chester Springs finished alone in sixth in the
division with an 82 and was the last player among the older group to punch his
ticket to Springhaven as he finished tied for eighth in the overall scoring.
Frankie Markiewicz of Middletown, Del. and Timothy Chaykosky
Jr. of Ambler finished tied for seventh, each posting an 84 and Colby Hook of
Selbyville, Del., Ryan Hannigan of Laurel, Del. and William Tone of Moorestown,
N.J. rounded out the top 10 as they shared ninth place at 85.
It was a regular Junior Tour stop for the girls and the
nine-holers and another member of Team Magcalayo, Jona Angela Magcalayo, topped
the girls 16-to-18 division with an 82. Magcalayo was especially solid during a
back-nine 38, going 1-under on a five-hole stretch that featured four straight
pars and a birdie.
Olivia Perry of Millsboro, Del. was the runnerup with a 91
and Holly Haber of Stevensville, Md. was third with a 99.
A third member of Wilmington’s Team Homer, Jack Homer,
topped the field of nine-holers with a 5-over 41. He jump-started his round
with a birdie on the second and a par on the third.
Sawyer Brockstedt of Rehoboth Beach, Del., who was solid in
all of the Junior Tour stops in the First State this week, was the runnerup
with a 42. Brockstedt, who represented Delaware in the Drive, Chip and Putt
National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday of Masters week, had
back-to-back pars on three and four and birdied the seventh.
Avery McCrery of Wilmington, Del. and Griffin Gaughan of
Avondale finished tied for third, each posting a 49. Another member of
Wilmington’s Team Ciconte, Joseph Ciconte, finished fifth with a 53 and Jack
Bujnowski of Middletown, Del. was sixth with a 62.
