The wind blows at Wycote Golf Club in southern Chester
County even when it isn’t blowing anywhere else. And it was definitely a factor
as the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour made a stop at Wyncote.
Ryan McCabe, who won the District One Class AA individual
title and led Devon Prep to the team title as a freshman last fall, and Keller
Mulhern of Exton dealt with the conditions better than anyone else as they
finished tied for first in the 13-to-15 age group, each carding a 3-over-par 75
over the challenging 6,380-yard, par-72 Wyncote layout.
The victory went to McCabe in a match of cards. Kristof
Kopecky of Garnet Valley was another two shots behind McCabe and Mulhern in
third with a 77. Win Thomas of Unionville finished third with a 78 and Ethan
Pecko of Ridley Park was fifth with an 80.
Garnet Valley junior Jacob Sokalsky and Chase Stephano of
Radnor shared sixth place, each posting an 82. Matthew Normand of Lumberton,
N.J., the Junior Tour’s Sam Penecale Scoring Average Leader among the
nine-holers last year, finished eighth and two Ambler entries, Noah Sim and
Luke Marvin, rounded out the top 10 as each carded an 86.
Two players ended up tied atop the 16-to-18 division as well
with Cole Shew of West Chester getting the tiebreaker edge over Alec Ryden of
Moorestown, N.J. after each carded a 4-over 76. Jack Cooley of Chadds Ford
finished alone in third place, two shots behind Shew and Ryden with a 78.
Nicholas Schnur of Lafayette Hill finished fourth with a 79.
Ryan Kennedy of Wayne, Joseph Taggart of Broomall, Haverford School sophomore
Edward Trumpbour and Blake Stephano of the Radnor Stephanos all shared fifth
place, each posting an 82. Blake Stephano was a District One Class AAA
qualifier for Radnor High as a junior last fall.
Damon Spatacco of West Chester finished alone in ninth with
an 84 and Jerry Haftmann of Springfield and Jake Armstrong of Haddonfield, N.J.
rounded out the top 10 as they tied for 10th at 88.
Angelina Tolentino of Mount Laurel, N.J. finished strong,
making pars on the last four holes on her way to an 81 that gave her the top
spot in the girls 13-to-15 division. Ava Lichok of Downingtown was the runnerup
with a 109 and Mary Grace Dunigan of Kennett Square took third with a 111.
Samuel Feeney of West Chester topped the nine-holers with a
50, a round that featured two pars. Sean Curran of Newtown Square was the
runnerup with a 58 and Jillian Burks of Paoli took third with a 61.
