The Brookside Country Club of Allentown trio of Carlos
Fullerton, Max Harrington and Adam Sutovich knew they wanted to give the Golf
Association of Philadelphia’s Four-Man Team Championship a shot. But they
needed a fourth.
The 19-year-old Harrington of Emmaus thought his roommate at
Saint Joseph’s, Richard Riva of Bent Creek Country Club, might be a good
choice. The 20-year-old Riva is a junior on the Saint Joseph’s golf team who
was a co-medalist in a local U.S. Open qualifier at Glenmaura National Golf
Club earlier this spring.
Riva it was. And Thursday at LedgeRock Golf Club in Mohnton,
Berks County the team proved to be a winning one as they posted a
two-best-balls-of-foursome 13-under 131 over the 6,375-yard, par-72 LedgeRock
layout to claim a one-shot victory over two other teams.
Sutovich, a 22-year-old Breinigsville resident, had met Riva
at last summer’s Pennsylvania Amateur Championship at White Manor Country Club.
The 22-year-old Harrington, a fifth-year senior at Penn State from Emmaus, and Riva
met for the first time Thursday before the team teed off.
They went out and played flawless golf with 13 birdies and
nary a counting bogey on the card. Fullerton and Sutovich each carded a 1-under
71 with Fullerton going 2-under on the outward nine. Riva added a solid 2-over
74 and Harrington posted a 6-over 78.
“We were talking about it at Brookside, discussing the
Four-Man team itself,” Fullerton told the GAP website. “That part was easy,
forming the 1-2-3 pairing to start. But then adding (Riva) was the perfect
addition.”
The foursome of Bob Arthur of Tavistock Country Club, Thomas
Hyland of Little Mill Country Club, Bryan Marvin of Old York Road Country Club
and James Muller of Manufacturers Golf & Country Club and the quartet of
Tyler McGarry and Jay Vasil of Fox Hill Country Club, Steve Oh of Philadelphia
Cricket Club and Ryan Rucinski of Fieldstone Golf Club shared second place at
12-under 132. Rucinski, a senior at Wilmington College, was the qualifying
medalist in the recent BMW Philadelphia Amateur Championship at Whitemarsh
Valley Country Club.
The Running Deer Golf Club foursome of Thomas Alestock,
Stephen Barry, Joey Russo and Joe Russo and the Riverton Country Club group of
Mathew Ade, David Gall, Kevin Kramarski and Ben Litt shared fourth place, each
team coming in at 11-under 133.
The foursome that was defending its Four-Man title – Jason
Barkley of Moselem Springs Golf Club, another Brookside Allentown member in
Mark Coassolo (the former Fleetwood golf coach for whom I looped in the Fall Scramble at Stonewall last
October), Shawn Lavin of Rolling Green Golf Club and Peter Moran of Whitford
Country Club – finished in a tie for sixth at 7-under 137.
Joining that group at 137 was the Wilmington Country Club
foursome of Robert Hacket Jr., Thomas Humphrey, Randy Mitchell and Steven
Walczak.
The Schuylkill Country Club quartet of Nick Hand, Luke
Morgan, Steve Rice and Ian Shollenberger finished alone in eighth at 5-under
139.
Two teams shared ninth place at 2-under 142, the Downingtown
Country Club foursome of Joe Avellino, Herb Mays, Rich Pruchnik and Tim Regan
and a quartet that included the Penn Oaks Golf Club trio of Russell Baribault,
Ryan Fogel and David Sim and Inniscrone Golf Club’s Dave Burchmore.
Four more teams bettered par at 1-under 143 and finished
tied for 11th. Among them were: The Concord Country Club group of
Jim Allen, Larry Benedetto, Bill Dwyer and Doug Fedoryshyn; the Coatesville
Country Club entry of Owen Brown, Joseph Kinsman, Scott Micale and Nic
Portonova; the Fieldstone Golf Club foursome of Wayne Ligato, Richard Ogorek,
Jerry Newell Jr. and Luke Wozniak; and the quartet of John Burke and Chris
Meares of Running Deer, Ryan Cass of
Merchantville Country Club ad Joe Zulli of Trump National Golf Club of
Philadelphia.
