Dylan Gooneratne played a lot of golf on the Philadelphia
Section PGA Junior Tour last summer and it paid dividends with a solid freshman
season at Plymouth-Whitemarsh as he was a District One qualifier out of the
tough Suburban One American Conference, earning first-team all-conference
honors.
He doesn’t seem to have missed a beat in the long, cold
winter since the Junior Tour shut it down in November. Gooneratne battled
through the biting cold Saturday to claim a Junior Tour victory, winning the
16-to-18 division by five shots at Middletown Country Club in Langhorne, Bucks
County.
Gooneratne made four birdies, two on each side, to fire a
3-over 73 over the 6,141-yard, par-70 Middletown layout. Ryan D’Ariano of West
Chester made three birdies on the back nine to close fast for second place at
8-over 78.
Ethan Finkelstein of Yardley finished third with an 82 and
Stephane de Brechard of Brooklyn, N.Y., was another shot back in fourth with an
83.
There was a four-way logjam for fifth place at 85 with Mason
Asadoorian and Matthew Fleming, both of
Richboro, Benjamin Barnett of Wellsboro and Nicholas Hano of Warrington
all landing on that number.
Christopher Vanhof of Georgetown, Del. finished ninth with
an 86 and Colin Kear of Doylestown rounded out the top 10 with a 90.
Jake Shmonov of Harrisburg topped the 13-to-15 division with
a 10-over 80 that featured a birdie at the eighth. Adam MacMillan of Cranbury,
N.J. and Luke Watson of Royersford finished tied for second, each posting an
82.
Three players – Corey Haydu of Doylestown and a couple of
Yardley guys, Christopher Myers and Stephen Cain -- shared fourth place, each carding an 84.
Christian Matt of Springhouse finished alone in seventh with
an 85, Kevin Motil of Sewell, N.J. and Daniel Fitzgerald of New Hope shared
eighth place at 86 and Jack Dunsmore of Doylestown rounded out the top 10 with
an 87.
Isabella McCloskey of Princeton Junction had the girls
16-to-18 division all to herself and claimed her second win of the season with
a 97.
Kathleen Mark, a Media resident and Episcopal Academy
freshman, continued a strong run of play in the chilly early going of 2018 with
a 92 that gave her the victory in the 13-to-15 division. Gwendolyn Powell of
Madison Township was the runnerup with an 85 and Riley Mulhern of Downingtown
took third with a 108.
John Keba of Emmaus birdied the seventh hole on his way to a
5-over 40 that topped the field of nine-holers. Michael Maslanka of Taylor, who
has been playing well in this early part of 2018, was just a shot back of Keba
in second with a 41.
Another member of Team Gooneratne from Plymouth Meeting,
Rhianna, shared third place with Ethan Martin of North Wales, each posting a
48. Sammi Yeselavage of Doylestown finished alone in fifth with a 49.
Paul Reilly of West Creek, N.J. and Justin Forman of Sewell,
N.J. shared sixth place, each posting a 50. Kayley Roberts of Phoenixville took
eighth with a 54 and Mason Tucker of York placed ninth with a 57.
Angelo Seravalli and Elora Walker, both of Philadelphia, and
Jillian Burks of Paoli finished in a tie for 10th at 60 and Ronan
Frawley of Washington Crossing was 13th with a 67.
