Saint Joseph’s sophomore Ross Pilliod, a Berks Catholic
product, carded a 1-under 70 to earn a share of third place after the opening
round of the Navy Fall Classic at the Naval Academy Golf Club Sunday.
Lafayette College freshman Reid Bedell, who lost to
Pilliod’s teammate Michael O’Brien in a playoff for the individual title at the
Bucknell Invitational last week, and host Navy’s Connor Tallman, a senior from
Lake Oswego, Ore., are tied at the top of the individual standings at 3-under
68.
Pilliod (an occasional Stonewall caddy this summer) helped
the Hawks post a 13-over 297 total, which has them sitting in 10th
place.
Also for Saint Joe’s, Reed Winkler, a freshman from
Salesianum, is tied for 16th with a 1-over 72, Drew Taylor, a senior
from East Berlin, is tied for 49th with a 77, Tyler Sokolis, a
junior from Central Bucks West, is tied for 54th with a 78, and
O’Brien, a freshman from West Chester, Ohio, is tied for 63rd with a
79.
Joining Pilliod in the group tied for third at 1-under 70 are
LeMoyne’s John Clare a senior from Camilus, N.Y., Robert Morris’ Max Palmer, a
freshman from Novi, Mich., Wagner’s Nicholas Masshafen, a junior from Fairport,
N.Y., Delaware’s Blaine Lafferty, a junior from Marlton, N.J., and Drexel’s
Aaron Fricke, a junior from Denver, Pa.
Massahafen led Wagner to the top of the team standings at
1-under 283. Robert Morris is five shots back in second at 4-over 288 and
California (Pa.) is third at 290. Host Navy’s A team, Drexel and Delaware are
tied for fourth at 293.
Another occasional Stonewall looper, Navy sophomore Paul
Mauer, who helped St. Joseph’s Prep win the 2014 PIAA Class AAA team title, is
tied for 34th with a 75. Mauer is on Navy’s B team.
Drexel sophomore Brendan Bacskai, a former Malvern Prep
standout, is tied for 25th with a 3-over 74.
