Erica Herr, a two-time PIAA champion during her career at
Council Rock North, and Wake Forest creeped a little closer to front-running
Virginia on the second day of the ACC Championship Saturday at Sedgefield
Country Club in Greensboro, S.C.
The Demon Deacons are certainly making a case that their
latest ranking by Golfstat of 45th
deserves to move a bit higher as they had the only subpar team score of the
day, a 3-under 285 that left them at 3-over 579, solidly in second place and
just six shots behind a Virginia team that is seeking its second straight ACC
tourney title.
For the second day in a row, Wake Forest got a spectacular
6-under 66 over the 6,089-yard, par-72 Sedgefield layout, home to the PGA
Tour’s Wyndham Championship, but it wasn’t by the same player who did it in
Friday’s opening round.
This time it was Sierra Sims, a junior from Austin, Texas
who went low, moving up to fourth in the individual chase at 2-under 142.
Virginia’s Lauren Coughlin, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., took
sole possession of first place in the individual standings, adding a 1-under 71
to her opening-round 66 to stand at 7-under 137.
Teammate Lauren Diaz-Yi, a junior from Thousand Oaks,
Calif., had a 2-under 70 Saturday and is in third place at 3-under 141. Coughlin
and Diaz-Yi led the Cavaliers, ranked 18th by Golfstat, to a solid 290 as they held onto the top spot in the team
standings at 3-under 573.
Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho, a freshman from Littleton,
Colo., had shared the opening-round lead with Coughlin with a brilliant 66 of
her own. She fell back a little with a 2-over 74 Saturday, but is alone in
second place at 4-under 140.
Wake Forest got solid contributions from Antonia Eberhard, a
freshman from Germany who matched par with a 72 and is tied for 11th
at 147, and Herr, a sophomore who posted a 1-over 73 and is tied for 25th
at 150.
Wake Forest is 11 shots clear of powerful Duke, No. 3 in the
latest Golfstat rankings. Duke, which
shared second place with Wake Forest following Friday’s opening round, had a
second-round 296 and is at 14-over 590.
The Blue Devils were led by sophomore Leona Maguire, the No.
1 amateur player in the world from Ireland who carded a 75 and is tied with
Miami’s Daniela Darquea, a junior from Ecuador, for fifth in the individual
standings at 1-over 145. Darquea posted a 2-over 74 in the second round.
Rounding out the top five in the team chase are 34th-ranked
North Carolina State, which had a 297 and is fourth at 594, and 47th-ranked
Clemson, which had a 299 and is fifth at 597.
Notre Dame, ranked 37th, bounced back from a
shaky 310 opening round with a 299 for a 609 total, but the Fighting Irish
still stand 10th in the team standings, albeit in better position to
move up with another strong showing in Sunday’s final round.
Senior captain Talia Campbell of Dallas showed the way for
Notre Dame with a 2-under 70 that left her tied for seventh at 2-over 146.
Emma Albrecht, a freshman from Ormond Beach, Fla., had a 74
and is tied for 29th at 149. Maddie Rose Hamilton, a freshman from
Louisville, Ky., had a 78 and is tied for 46th at 156, the third of
the Irish’s talented stable of freshmen, Isabella DiLisio, the 2013 PIAA Class
AAA champion at Mount St. Joseph, had a 77 and is tied for 53rd at
158 and Jordan Ferreira, a junior from University Place, Wash., had an 81 and
is 57th at 164.
Another battle royal is being waged at the SEC Championship
as Florida, No. 7 in the latest Golfstat rankings,
flipped the script on No. 1-ranked Alabama at The Legacy Course at Greystone
Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. in the second round Saturday and
the two powerhouses head into Sunday’s final round tied for the team lead.
In Friday’s opening round, the Crimson Tide fired a 2-under
286 while Florida posted a 292 total. The Gators matched Alabama’s opening
round with a 286 Saturday while the Tide matched Florida’s opening-round 292.
The teams are tied at 2-over 578 after two rounds.
The Gators are being led by Maria Torres, a junior from
Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico who added a 4-under 68 to her opening-round 69 and
her 7-under 137 total has her six shots clear of the field in the individual
standings.
Alabama has three players in the top five, though, with Cheyenne
Knight, a freshman from Aledo, Texas, and Emma Talley, a senior from Princeton,
Ky. and the reigning NCAA individual champion, two of the three players tied
for second behind Torres at 1-under 143. Knight led the Tide with a 1-under 71
while the steady Talley checked in with a 1-over 73.
Teammate Lakareber Abe, a sophomore from Angleton, Texas,
had a 2-over 74 and is alone in fifth place at even-par 144.
The third member of that trio tied for second at 1-under 143
is South Carolina’s Katelyn Dambaugh, a junior from Goose Creek, S.C. who added
a 1-under 71 to her opening-round 72.
