She usually went by Alex Liu when she was a standout at
Lower Merion. She was a good high school player, but the William & Mary
senior, who goes by Alessandra Liu these days, has taken it up a notch in her
four years in Williamsburg, Va.
Sunday, Liu fired a 1-under 71 to capture individual honors
in the River Landing Classic for her fourth tournament title of the season,
tying a William & Mary team record.
Liu had a pair of 73s over the 6,082-yard, par-72 River
Landing Golf Course layout in Wallace, N.C. in Saturday’s double-round and her
1-under final round gave her a 1-over 217 total that was one shot better than
Harvard’s Anne Cheng, a junior from Torrance, Calif. Cheng led Liu by two shots
after going 71-73 in Saturday’s double-round, but fell back a little Sunday
with a 74 to finish at 218.
Columbia’s Jacqueline Chulya, a junior from Thailand, and
Penn State’s Halley Morell, a senior from Brecksville, Ohio, finished tied for
third at 219. Chulya had rounds of 76, 71 and 72. Morell, who led a strong team
effort by the Nittany Lions, had rounds of 74, 75 and 70.
The team title went to East Carolina, No. 30 in the latest Golfstat rankings. The Pirates had
rounds of 298, 313 and 287 for a 34-over 898 total. They were led by their
Swedish connection as senior Frida Gustafsson Spang and sophomore Lisa
Pettersson finished tied for fifth in the individual standings at 223. They
were especially tough in the final round when Gustafsson Spang fired a 3-under
69 and Pettersson posted a 2-under 70 in leading East Carolina to the only
subpar team score of the weekend.
Led by Morell’s 2-under 70, Penn State fired a final-round
293 for a solid runnerup finish at 902, four shots back of East Carolina.
Denise St. Pierre’s Nittany Lions once again got solid
showings from their trio of home-grown freshmen. Jackie Rogowicz, a two-time
PIAA runnerup at Pennsbury, finished ninth with typically consistent rounds of
75, 76 and 74 for a 225 total. Lauren Waller, the 2014 PIAA Class AAA runnerup
at Canon-McMillan, and Cara Basso, the 2012 PIAA Class AA champion as a
sophomore at Villa Maria Academy, finished tied for 18th at 229.
Waller went 77, 76 and 76 and Basso had rounds of 77, 79 and 73.
Also for Penn State, Grace Cheng, a senior from Canada,
competed as an individual and finished tied for 42nd with rounds of
79, 84 and 75 for a 238 total, and Ariana Coyle Diez, a sophomore from Ireland,
finished tied for 45th with rounds of 78, 83 and 78 for a 239 total.
Harvard finished third with rounds of 291, 313 and 301 for a
905 total. In addition to the runnerup finish by Cheng, the Crimson’s Lita Guo,
a sophomore from New Zealand, finished tied for fifth with the East Carolina
Swedes at 223. Guo had rounds of 73, 77 and 73.
Old Dominion finished fourth with rounds of 312, 304 and 298
for a 914 total.
Penn, with rounds of 306, 311 and 305, finished fifth at
922. The Quakers were led by Rachel Dai, a freshman from Milton, Ga. who
finished tied for 10th at 226. She had had rounds of 76, 76 and 74.
Led by Liu, William & Mary finished sixth with rounds of
314, 310 and 301 for a 925 total. The Tribe got a sparkling final round from
Katie Edelblut, a sophomore from New Hope whose 4-under 68 was the best round of her collegiate career and enabled her
to finish tied for 14th at 228.
Delaware finished in a tie for eighth with rounds of 318,
316 and 303 for a 937 total. The Blue Hens were led by Nathalie Filler, a
senior from Bloomfield, Conn. who bounced back from an opening-round 80 with
rounds of 73 and 74 to finish tied for 12th at 227.
