I’ll admit it, I don’t pay enough attention to
college golf at the Division III level, but when a group of players descended
on my new hangout at Stonewall in East Nantmeal, Chester County, Tuesday, I
figured I’d check back to see how they did.
Having recently revived my caddying career, I’ve toured the Old
Course (6,384 yards, par 70 for the men and 6,047 yards, par 71 for the women),
which will play host to the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship later this year, a
few times in this fledgling golf season and the Tom Doak design is a tough
test.
I can attest that a rainy Tuesday morning had turned into a
sunny day with a chilly wind by the time the contestants for the Ursinus Spring
Invitational teed off Tuesday afternoon.
Cabrini dominated the men’s division with Joe Myers, a
junior from Archbishop Carroll (of which I am proud graduate, Class of 1973),
capturing the individual title with a solid 3-over 73 while leading the
Cavaliers to the team title with a 315 total.
David Gall, a freshman from Cinnaminson, N.J., was four shots back of his Cabrini
teammate in second place with a 77 and the Cavaliers’ Clay Anders, a sophomore
out of Souderton High, finished tied for third with Keystone’s Race Sick, a
junior from Tunkhannock, at 80.
Arcadia’s Tate Olson, a senior from Clifton, N.J., and host
Ursinus’ Lamar Saxon, a sophomore out of Boyertown High, finished tied for
fifth.
Saxon led Ursinus to second in the team standings at 351,
followed by Arcadia (358), Widener (365), Keystone (375) and Cairn (395).
Ursinus cruised to the team title in the women’s division
with a 372 total with Muhlenberg 43 shots back in second at 415.
The individual title went to Neumann’s Lauren Cusack, a
senior from Canada who posted an 83, a very good score on a windy day at
Stonewall. Muhlenberg’s Aine Filler, a freshman from Moorestown, N.J., was
three shots back in second with an 86.
Emily McGarrigle, a freshman out of Conrad Weiser High, led
the way for Ursinus with an 89, which earned her a share of third place with
Alvernia’s Emily Gilbert, a freshman out of Boyertown High.
Ursinus’ Rebecca Chiger, a freshman out of Abington High,
finished alone in fifth with a 91 and the Bears’ Matison Weand, a freshman from
Swansea, Mass., and Sara Thompson, a sophomore out of Bishop Shanhan, finished
tied for seventh, each posting a 96.
Alvernia finished third in the team scoring at 417 followed
by Neumann (506) and Arcadia (552).
