Haverford School senior Max Siegfried teed it up in the
Junior Invitational at Sage Valley presented by Electrolux over the weekend and
finished tied for 28th.
Siegfried was the Inter-Ac League’s top player during the
six mini-tournaments that comprise the league’s regular season last fall and
earned a spot in the elite field at the 7,437-yard, par-72 Sage Valley Golf
Club layout in Graniteville, S.C.
Siegfried, the 2015 Golf Association of Philadelphia Junior
Player of the Year, struggled in the opening round at Sage Valley, carding an
80, but was 1-over the rest of the way with rounds of 72 and 73 to finish at
9-over 225. Siegfried plays out of Aronimink Golf Club.
Wyomissing junior Nate Menon, who captured the PIAA Class AA
championship last fall, finished tied for 18th at 223. A member of
LedgeRock Golf Club, Menon had rounds of 75, 75 and 73.
The title went to Austin Eckroat, an Oklahoma State commit
from Edmond, Okla. Eckroat opened the tournament with a brilliant 7-under 65
and followed it up with rounds of 70 and 75 for a 6-under 219 total.
That gave Eckroat a one-shot margin of victory over Australian
Min Woo Lee, who finished strong with a final-round 67.
Another two shots back in third at 3-under 213 was John
Axelson of Denmark. Axelson, who plans to attend Florida beginning in the fall
of 2017, had rounds of 73, 69 and 71.
Tiger Woods, the winner of 14 major professional
championships who is slowly trying to recover from his latest back surgery,
showed up at Sage Valley last Thursday and staged a clinic and a
question-and-answer session with the elite 54-player field.
