A couple of PIAA Class AAA qualifiers last fall, Quakertown sophomore Nick Joyce and Liberty junior Matt Vital, battled it out in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior stop at Landis Creek Golf Club Sunday.
In weather that felt more like early March than early April, Joyce rode a hot front nine to a 1-over-par 71 that gave him a one-shot victory over Matt Vital in the 16-to-18 division.
Joyce, who opened the 2022 season with a victory in a two-day Junior Golf Scoreboard Philly Junior Tour event at Seaview Golf Club’s Pines Course at the Jersey Shore a couple of weeks ago, made birdies at the first, fifth, seventh and ninth holes in a front-nine 34 and finished with nine pars on his scorecard at the 6,068-yard, par-70 Landis Creek layout.
Matt Vital, the Scoring Average Leader in the 16-to-18 division for the Philly Junior Tour’s wraparound 2020-2021 season, also had four birdies on his card, three of them on the front nine at the fourth, fifth and ninth holes. He added a birdie at the 16th hole and also had nine pars as he finished a shot behind Joyce in second place with a 2-over 72.
Ajeet Bagga, who led Germantown Academy to the Inter-Ac League championship as a sophomore last fall, made birdies at the 14th and 18th holes and had nine pars on his scorecard as he finished five shots behind Matt Vital in third place with a 77.
David Birmingham of Reading took fourth place with a 78, Pope John Paul II junior Jack Brennan was fifth with a 79 and Derek Johnson of Mountain Top, Matt Vital’s twin brother Michael, also a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior at Liberty last fall, and Colin Vineburg of Sparks, Md. finished in a tie for sixth, each signing for an 80.
Spring-Ford teammates Luke Fazio, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, and Jaden Minter, both juniors, and Ayush Patel of Collegeville rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as they finished in a tie for ninth place, each landing on 81. Fazio was the Pioneer Athletic Conference individual champion and led the Rams to the conference championship last fall.
West Chester Rustin freshman Nick Linkchorst made an eagle on Landis Creek’s par-5 seventh hole and had 10 pars on his scorecard as he finished atop the 13-to-15 division leaderboard with a 5-over 75.
Jack Crowley of Wayne birdied the second hole on his way to a front-nine 37 and finished with seven pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors in the division with an 82.
Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J., Haverford School freshman J.P. Hoban, James Schramek of Chalfont and Cole Berry of West Chester finished in a four-way logjam for third place, each carding an 84.
Sieben had a steady round that featured 10 pars, Hoban had seven pars and Schramek and Berry each had nine pars on their scorecards.
Jack Luterman of Ardmore took eighth place with an 86 and Collin Schreiber of Kunkletown and Brody Bell of Royersford rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division as they finished in a tie for ninth, each registering an 88.
Phoenixville’s Roberts sisters, Kate and Kayley, continued to dominate the girls divisions. Kate Roberts was the Philly Junior Tour’s 16-to-18 division Player of the Year and the Scoring Average Leader for the wraparound 2020-’21 season and Kayley Roberts swept the same two awards in the 13-to-15 division.
Kate Roberts, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a sophomore at Phoenixville, had the best score of the day among the girls as she captured top honors in the 16-to-18 division with a solid 7-over 77. Kate Roberts made back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth holes. Six of her eight pars came on the front nine as she posted an even-par 36 on Landis Creek’s outgoing nine.
Sophie DeSantis of Glen Mills birdied the second hole and had seven pars on her scorecard as she claimed runnerup honors with an 84. Oley Valley junior Heidi Wegscheider made five pars, all on Landis Creek’s front nine, as she finished in third place with a 99.
Mary McNelly of Collegeville rounded out the 16-to-18 division field as she finished in fourth place with a 120.
Kayley Roberts, who will join her sister Kate with the Phoenixville golf program later this year, really got it going on the front nine at Landis Creek with birdies at the second, third, fourth and seventh holes and two of her four pars in a front-nine of even-par 36. Kayley Roberts added a fifth birdie at the 17th hole as she claimed the victory in the 13-to-15 division with an 80.
Kate and Kayley Roberts swept their respective divisions a week earlier in a Philly Junior Tour stop at Honeybrook Golf Club played in brutally cold weather. The weather at Landis Creek might not have been great, but it was balmy in comparison to the stop at Honeybrook.
Giula Weisser of Reading made a par on the third hole on her way to a 95 that earned her a second-place finish. Camryn Hoff of Nazareth had four pars on her scorecard as she took third place with a 97.
Charlotte Anstine of Chester Springs landed in fourth place with a 104, Rhea Malakar of Flourtown was fifth with a 110 and Julia Nawalany, another Chester Springs entry, rounded out the 13-to-15 division field as she finished sixth with a 113.
Ian Rotto of Kennett Square had five pars as he bested the field of nine-holers with a 5-over 41. It was the second straight Sunday victory for Rotto as he prevailed in the cold at Honeybrook a week earlier.
Colby Komancheck of Royersford and Alex DiGiacinto of Nazareth finished in a tie for second place, each ending up two shots behind Rotto with a 7-over 43. Komancheck had back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes and three pars on his scorecard and DiGiacinto had five pars on his card.
Holden Sparks of Nazareth and Chloe Donohue of Moorestown, N.J. shared fourth place as each landed on 45.
Preston Minio of Lansdale took sixth place with a 48, Reid Tornetta of Collegeville was seventh with a 49 and Henry Sokol of Villanova was eighth with a 50.
That gave Henry low-Sokol honors as Jack Sokol of Villanova’s Team Sokol and Kieran Shaw of Downingtown rounded out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division, each finishing in a tie for ninth place, a shot behind Henry Sokol with a 51.
