With Kornkamol Sukaree, a freshman from Huntingdon Beach,
Calif., earning a share of the individual lead, Illinois, No. 30 in the latest Golfstat rankings, carded a 3-over-par
291 Friday to take a three-shot lead after the opening round of the Big Ten
Championship at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio.
Sukaree carded a 1-under 71 over the 6,357-yard, par-72 TPC
River’s Bend layout to share the individual lead with Purdue’s Ida Ayu Indira
Melati Putri, a senior from Indonesia, and Indiana’s Kari Belville, a graduate
student from Granger, Ind.
Belville and the No. 56 Hoosiers shared second place with
No. 57 Ohio State, each coming in at 6-over 294. Teams entered six competitors
with the top four scores counting to the team total.
Two-time reigning Big Ten champion Michigan State, ranked 19th, shared fourth place with No. 33 Purdue at 9-over

No. 69 Michigan was alone in sixth place after carding a
10-over 298 and Minnesota, outperforming its No. 108 ranking, was a shot behind
the Wolverines in seventh place at 11-over 299.
It was a little bit of a disappointing start for No. 49 Penn
State as the Nittany Lions landed in 11th place at 19-over 307.
Backing up Sukaree for the Illini was Tristyn Newlin, a
junior from Richmond, Ky. who carded a solid even-par 72 to share fourth place
with Ohio State’s Niki Schroeder, a senior from Avon Lake, Ohio, a shot behind
the three co-leaders.
Also for Illinois, Bing Singhsumalee, a senior from
Naperville, Ill., and Crystal Wang, a freshman from Diamond Bar, Calif., both
landed in the group tied for 14th at 2-over 74.
Katie Hallinan, a freshman from Loveland, Ohio, was in the
group tied for 48th after she posted a 78. Rounding out the Illinois
lineup was Ali Morallos, a sophomore from Lakewood, Calif. who posted an 82
that left her in 74th place.
Penn State was led by its freshman standout, Sarah Willis of
Eaton Ohio, who was part of a seven-player logjam tied for seventh at 1-over
73, a shot behind Illinois’ Newlin and Ohio State’s Schroeder.
A couple of Schroeder’s Ohio State teammates, Aneka
Seumanutafa, a freshman from Emmitsburg, Md., and Lauren Peter, a freshman from
Carmel, N.Y., were also in that big group tied for seventh. Maryland also had a
pair of players tied for seventh with 73s, Virunpat Olankitkunchai, a sophomore
from Thailand, and Zialin Tian, a junior from China. Tian finished in a tie for
second a year ago at TPC River’s Bend.
Rounding out the group at 73 were Michigan’s Ashley Lau, a
freshman from Malaysia, and Minnesota’s Grace Kellar, a sophomore from Edina,
Minn.
Backing up Willis for Penn State was junior Megan McLean, a
Voorhees High product who is in the group tied for 33rd at 4-over
76. Junior Madelein Herr, the 2015 District One Class AAA champion as a senior
at Council Rock North, and senior Jackie Rogowicz, a two-time PIAA runnerup at
Pennsbury, both landed in the group tied for 54th at 7-over 79.
Senior Cara Basso, who starred scholastically at Villa Maria
Academy, was in the group tied for 69th with an 81. Basso got it
going at TPC River’s Bend a year ago, finishing tied for fourth, a performance
that earned her a ticket to the NCAA Madison Regional to compete as an individual.
Rounding out the Penn State lineup was senior Lauren Waller,
the 2014 PIAA Class AAA runnerup as a senior at Canon-McMillan who finished
among the group tied for 75th with an 83.
