Barbin brothers right at home in strong Junior Tour showings at Chesapeake Bay

The Barbin brothers of Elkton, Md. have always been especially tough when playing close to home and Saturday’s Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Rising Sun, Md. was no different.
Andrew Barbin fired a solid 2-over 73 over the 6,429-yard, par-71 Chesapeake Bay layout in springlike weather to take top honors in the 16-to-18 division. Younger brother Evan wasn’t far behind as he posted a 5-over 76 to get a share of third place.
Andrew Barbin only had one birdie, at the par-4 eighth hole, but he was steady all day, making only three bogeys and 14 pars.
Joshua Ryan, who earned a ticket to the PIAA Class AAA Championship for the second straight fall as a sophomore playing at Norristown High, was Andrew Barbin’s closest pursuer, finishing second with a 4-over 75.
Ryan is home-schooled through Commonwealth Connections Academy, but represents Norristown High on the golf course. He had an up-and-down round that included five birdies that offset nine bogeys.
Sharing third place with Evan Barbin at 5-over 76 was Plymouth-Whitemarsh sophomore Dylan Gooneratne. West Chester Rustin freshman Ryan D’Ariano and Nikita Romanov of Wilmington, Del. finished a shot behind Evan Barbin and Gooneratne in a tie for seventh at 6-over 77.
Jake Maddaloni, a sophomore on The Haverford School’s Inter-Ac League championship team last fall, headed a group of three players tied for seventh place at 78. Maddaloni was joined at that figure by Hunter King of Atglen and Jake Armstrong of Haddonfield, N.J.
Rounding out the top 10 were Jack Farkas of Ardmore and Graham Calhoun of Lititz, both of whom carded an 83 to finish tied for 10th place.
Sawyer Marten of East Petersburg carded a solid 9-over 80 to take top honors in the 13-to-15 division. Marten had 12 pars, matching the card on the last three holes to hold onto his lead.
Matthew Normand of Lumberton, N.J. and Joseph Madden of Oxford were three shots behind Marten in a tie for second, each carding an 83. Normand was awarded second place in a scorecard playoff.
Joseph Fargnoli of Mickleton, N.J. finished in fourth place with an 84, Matthew Pulcinella of Chadds Ford was fifth with an 86, Tyler Debusschere of Wallingford was sixth with a 90 and Hunter Stetson of Newtown Square was seventh with a 94.
Francis Wren of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. took eighth place with a 96, Zachary Antao of Chadds Ford was ninth with a 102 and Henry Kelleher of Middletown, Del. rounded out the top 10 as he was alone in 10th place with a 124.
Charlotte Scully, a Unionville sophomore who reached the PIAA Class AAA Championship and finished in a tie for second in the District One Class AAA Championship last fall, fired a 7-over 78 to capture a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division. Scully had four birdies at Chesapeake Bay, two on each side.
Central Bucks East junior Sarah Scarpill was the runnerup with an 86. Ava O’Sullivan, a freshman on Downingtown East’s PIAA Class AAA runnerup team last fall, was third with an 88. Kimberleigh Shallock of Orlando, Fla. was fourth with a 131.
Hannah Barrett of Carlisle birdied the par-5 sixth hole on her way to an 88 that earned her top honors in the 13-to-15 division. Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting’s Team Gooneratne was the runnerup with a 90.
Stefania Fedun of Glenmoore took third place with a 98 and Mackensy Knaub of York was fourth with a 99.
Mason Tucker of York bested the field of nine-holers with an 8-over 43 that featured three pars, including back-to-back pars on the second and third holes. Hank Kancher of Philadelphia was the runnerup with a 45.
Carson Holmes of Thorndale finished in third place with a 47, Reed Krosse of York was fourth with a 48, and another York entry, Lawson Leeper, shared fifth place with Davis Conaway of West Chester, each posting a 50.
Nicholas Armitage of Philadelphia took seventh place with a 58, Colton Orris of Hershey was eighth with a 58, Zack Sullivan of Lincoln University was ninth with a 59 and Emily Mayo of Boothwyn rounded out the top 10 as she finished alone in 10th place with a 60.
