William Mirams, a senior at Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg,
is hoping to be right back at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in Springettsbury
Township, York County for the PIAA Championship next week doing just what he
did Saturday in capturing the top spot in 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia
Section PGA Junior Tour stop.
Mirams, the runnerup in the PIAA Class AA Championship a
year ago, fired a 2-under-par 69 over the 6,312-yard, par-71 Heritage Hills
layout Saturday. He had birdies at the seventh, 10th and 18th
holes.
Mirams had a strong showing in last summer’s Golf
Association of Philadelphia’s Junior Boys’ Championship at Blue Bell Country
Club. Playing out of Shawnee Country Club, Mirams made it all the way to the
final before falling to a red-hot Ryan Tall, the former Conestoga standout who
was playing out of Spring-Ford Country Club and claimed a 4 and 3 victory.
I’m hoping to head up to Golden Oaks Golf Club Monday for
the PIAA East Regional Championship as survivors of district championships in
the eastern half of the state try to take the last step to the next week’s PIAA
Championship at Heritage Hills.
Logan Paczewski of Dallas was the runnerup to Mirams with a
1-under 70. Spring-Ford sophomore Luke Watson finished third with a 2-over 73.
Norristown’s Team Ryan, senior Caleb Ryan and sophomore
Joshua Ryan, had strong showings at Heritage Hills Saturday. Caleb Ryan fired a
3-over 74 to finish alone in fourth. Joshua Ryan, the Pioneer Athletic
Conference champion, finished in a tie for fifth with Souderton senior Thomas Butler
and Logan Hess of Willow Street, each carding a 4-over 75.
The Ryan brothers, who are home-schooled by Commonwealth
Connections Academy, but represent Norristown High on the golf course, both
reached the PIAA Class AAA Championship at Heritage Hills a year ago, Caleb
Ryan for a second time.
Russell McPaul of York finished alone in eighth with a 76.
Jake Rotelle of Honey Brook and Souderton sophomore Stephen Butler – I’m
guessing he’s the younger brother of Thomas Butler – rounded out the top 10 as
they finished tied for ninth, each carding an 82.
The Ryan brothers, Spring-Ford’s Watson and Stephen Butler
all advanced out of last week’s District One Class AAA Championship at Turtle
Creek Golf Club and will be in the field at Golden Oaks Monday, bidding to make
it to the state championship at Heritage Hills.
Jake Shmonov of Harrisburg posted a 7-over 78, a round that
featured birdies at the second and seventh holes as well as one at the tough
par-3 15th, to take top honors in the 13-to-15 division.
Keller Mulhern, who is having a solid freshman season on the
Malvern Prep golf team, was the runnerup with a 79 and James Vinson of
Princeton Junction, N.J. finished third with an 80.
Alex Gekas of York and Darren Nolan of Glenside finished
tied for fourth, each carding an 82, and Connor Gherghel of Orwigsburg and
Dylan Kochis of Exton ended up in a tie for sixth at 83.
Jun Lee of York took eighth with an 84 and Trevor Snyder of
Dover and Zachary Sandler of Gladwyne rounded out the top 10 as they finished
tied for ninth, each landing on 86.
Jessica McClellan of Freeland posted a 90 to finish on top
in the girls 16-to-18 division for her first Junior Tour victory of the
wraparound 2018-’19 season. Souderton senior Helen Shaw was the runnerup with a
99.
Mason Tucker of York carded a solid 2-over 38 that included
birdies at the fifth and eighth holes to best the field of nine-holers.
Tyler Fortney of Fayetteville, Reed Krosse of York and
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting each posted a 44 with Fortney getting
second, Krosse third and Gooneratne fourth in a match of cards. The total on
the final three holes turned out to be the tiebreaker.
Mia Pace of Exton finished fifth with a 48. Phillip Calla of
Harrisburg and Zachary Rengen of Mechanicsburg shared sixth place, each signing
for a 56. Nick Linkchorst of Glen Mills finished eighth with a 57 and John
Stevenson of Flourtown was ninth with a 59.
