Cernousek helps Texas A&M take the lead after first two rounds of NCAA Championship at La Costa

With Adela Cernousek, a junior from France and No. 30 in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), leading the way, Southeastern Conference power Texas A&M grabbed a five-shot lead after two rounds of the NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa’s North Course in Carlsbad, Calif.

Cernousek carded her second straight 4-under-par 68 Saturday over the 6,297-yard, par-72 North Course layout at La Costa to take a two-shot lead in the individual standings over Clemson’s Annabelle Pancake, a senior from Zionsville, Ind. and No. 68 in the Women’s WAGR.

Texas A&M, the runnerup to Mississippi State in last month’s SEC Championship, had trailed Clemson, out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, by a shot after the Aggies posted a 7-under 291 in Friday’s opening round.

Texas A&M added 4-under 284 in Saturday’s second round for an 11-under 565 total that gave the Aggies over Pac-12 champion Stanford. The Cardinal, who have been a major factor at nationals for the last three seasons, registered their second straight 3-under 285 for a 6-under 570 total.

Stanford is coming off a dominating performance in capturing the team crown in the Cle Elum Regional.

Clemson, behind Pancake, added a 5-over 293 in Saturday’s second round to its opening round of 8-under 280 as the ACC’s Tigers (there’s a lot of Tigers in the top five in the team standings) were in third place, three shots behind Stanford at 3-under 573.

UCLA, another Pac-12 entry, was a shot behind Clemson in fourth place as the Bruins added a solid 5-under 283 to their opening-round 291 and were at 2-under 574.

The SEC’s powerful pair of Tigers, Auburn and LSU, both coming off impressive regional team crowns, were tied for fifth place, each landing on 1-under 575.

Auburn, the Plains Tigers, added a 2-over 290 to their opening round of 3-under 285. The Plains Tigers captured the team crown in the Auburn Regional on their home course.

LSU, the Bayou Tigers, added a 2-under 286 in Saturday’s second round to their opening round of 2-over 289. The Bayou Tigers claimed the team title in the Bryan Regional.

Oregon, out of the Pac-12, was two shots behind Auburn and LSU in seventh place with a 1-over 577 total as the Ducks signed for a solid 5-under 283 in Saturday’s second round after opening with a 6-over 294.

They’re all trying to finish in the top eight at the end of 72 holes of qualifying for match play Monday. The eight survivors will square off in match play beginning Tuesday.

Backing up Cernousek for Texas A&M was Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Boggio, a freshman from Spain and No. 17 in the Women’s WAGR as she added a 1-over 73 in Saturday’s second round to her opening round of 4-under 68 and was in the group tied for seventh place at 3-under 141.

Zoe Slaughter, the Aggies’ veteran senior from Houston, Texas, was in the group tied for 23rd place at 1-under 143 as she recorded a 1-under 71 in Saturday’s second round after matching par in the opening round with a 72.

Bianca Fernandez Garcia-Boggio, a graduate student and the elder of the sisters from Spain, was in the group tied for 38th place at 1-over 73 as she matched par with a 72 in Saturday’s second round after opening with a 1-over 73.

Rounding out the Texas A&M lineup was Jennie Park, a graduate student from Carrollton, Texas as she was in the group tied for 101st place at 8-over 152. Park bounced back from an opening-round 79 with a 1-ovedr 73 in Saturday’s second round.

Clemson’s Pancake posted a second straight 3-under 69 and was two shots behind Cernousek in second place in the individual standings at 6-under 138.

Looming a shot behind Pancake in third place was Florida State’s Lottie Woad, a sophomore from England and No. 4 in the Women’s WAGR, at 5-under 139.

Woad, an impressive winner of last month’s Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship, had grabbed the lead with an opening round of 7-under 65. Woad backed off a little in Saturday’s second round with a 2-over 74.
