Davis Conaway, who captured the Bert Linton Inter-Ac League individual championship as a freshman at Malvern Prep last fall, let a lead slip away, but hung on for a solid runnerup finish in the 16-to-18 division as the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour staged its Philadelphia Junior Open, which wrapped on a Memorial Day Monday at Jeffersonville Golf Club near Norristown.
Conaway opened the weekend with a sparkling 1-under-par 69 over the 6,510-yard, par-70 Jeffersonville layout. It would be the only round under par for the weekend.
Conaway’s opening round included birdies at the second, sixth, ninth and 11th holes and he had 11 pars on his scorecard.
Conaway added a solid 2-over 72 in Sunday’s second round, but he struggled a little in the final round with a 77 while Grayson Wodd, an invader from Fredericksburg, Va., matched par in the final round with a 70 that enabled him to take the title with a 5-over 215 total.
Conaway settled for a second-place finish with an 8-over 218 total, three shots behind Wood.
Wood is listed as a Class of 2022 competitor, which would make him a year out of high school. He had added a 3-over 73 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 72. His steady final-round 70 featured birdies at the third, 14th and 18th holes and 12 pars.
Brady Manning, a senior on Downingtown West’s District One Class AAA championship last fall, finished two shots behind Conaway in third place with a 10-over 220 total. Manning closed with a solid 2-over 72 after recording back-to-back 4-over 74s in the first two rounds.
Ethan Martin, a junior on the roster of Catholic League power La Salle, finished two shots behind Manning in fourth place with a 12-over 222 total. Martin was only two shots behind Conaway following a solid start with a 1-over 71. Martin added a 76 in Sunday’s second round before closing with a 5-over 75.
Aidan Farkas, who finished in a tie for sixth place in the PIAA Class AAA Championship as a junior at St. Joseph’s Prep last fall, also got off to a good start as he matched par in the opening round with a 70. Farkas was only a shot behind Conaway going into the final round after he added a 3-over 73 in Sunday’s second round.
Farkas, an Ardmore resident, struggled in the final round with an 80 that left him a shot behind Martin in fifth place with a 223 total.
Moravian Academy junior Thomas Young finished six shots behind Farkas in sixth place with a 229 total. Young bounced back from an opening-round 80 with a solid 3-over 73 in the second round before closing with a 76.
John Stevenson of Ambler finished a shot behind Young in seventh place with a 230 total as he sandwiched a solid 4-over 74 in Sunday’s second round with a pair of 78s.
Andrew Bilson, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior at Manheim Township last fall, headed a group of four players tied for eighth place at 231 that also included Jaden Minter, the Pioneer Athletic Conference’s individual champion as a senior at Spring-Ford last fall, Timothy Peters of State College and Thomas Margison of Silver Spring, Md.
Bilson added a 76 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 77 before closing with a 78. Peters finished up with a 79 after registering back-to-back 76s in the first two rounds. Minter added a 5-over 75 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 76 before closing with an 80. After opening with a 78, Margison improved by a shot in each successive round, adding a 77 in Sunday’s second round before finishing up with a 76.
Cyrus Parvizi, who capped his scholastic career at Harriton by earning a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Championship last fall, finished a shot behind the quartet tied for eighth place with a 232 total that left him alone in 12th place. Parvizi added a 77 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 79 before finishing up with his best round of the weekend, a 6-over 76.
Colby Komancheck of Royersford finished up with a 78 to claim top honors in the Boys 14-15 division with a 27-over 237 total. Somebody’s getting a talented addition to its roster this fall when Komancheck starts playing high school golf.
Komancheck was solid in the final round, making a birdie on the 13th hole and finishing with 10 pars on his scorecard. He had opened with an 80 before adding a 79 in Sunday’s second round.
Jake Aronson of Demarest, N.J. closed with the best individual round in the 14-15 division for the weekend, a 5-over 75, but couldn’t quite catch Komancheck, finishing in second place with a 239 total, two shots behind Komancheck.
Aronson had opened with an 83 before adding an 81 in Sunday’s second round.
Enzo Allain of Basking Ridge, N.J. was only a shot behind Komancheck going into the final round after adding an 81 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 79. Allain closed with an 81 to finish a shot behind Aronson in third place with a 240 total.
Lucas Kozak of Phoenixville had the lead going into the final round after adding a solid 6-over 76 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 79. Kozak struggled in the final round, recording an 87 to finish a shot behind Allain with a 241.
Chase Yenser, who capped a strong freshman season at Daniel Boone by earning a ticket to the PIAA Class AAA Championship last fall, finished two shots behind Kozak in fifth place with a 243 total after closing with his best round of the weekend, an 8-over 78. Yenser had added an 83 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 82.
Patrick Duda of Phoenixville carded back-to-back 81s in the last two rounds to his opening-round 84 as he finished three shots behind Yenser in sixth place with a 246 total.
Declan Conner of Swarthmore was two shots behind Duda in seventh place with a 248 total as he added an 85 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 81 before finishing up with an 82.
Michael Liu of Garnet Valley was two shots behind Conner in eighth place with a 250 total as he had his best round of the weekend, an 81, in Sunday’s second round after opening with an 85. Liu closed with an 84.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 14-15 division were two players, Grant Burkhart of Kennett Square and Jimmy Warmkessel of Malvern, who finished in a tie for ninth place, each landing on 253, three shots behind Liu.
Burkhart opened with a solid 7-over 77, but struggled to a 91 in Sunday’s second round before finishing up with an 85. Warmkessel closed with his best round of the weekend, an 81, after adding an 87 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 85.
Benjamin Mayer of Garnet Valley was a shot behind Burkhart and Warmkessel in 11th place with a 254 total. Mayer added an 89 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 83 before closing with his best round of the weekend, an 82.
Ian Rotto of Kennett Square was a runaway winner of the Boys 11-to-13 division as he had nine pars on his scorecard in a final-round 82 that gave him a 239 total.
The younger guys and the girls played Jeffersonville at 5,918 yards.
Rotto had opened with his best round of the weekend, an 8-over 78 that featured birdies on the seventh, 12th, 16th and 18th holes. He added a 79 in Sunday’s second round, making birdies on the seventh, ninth and 14th holes.
Rotto’s closest pursuers, Logan Stoney of Hillsborough, N.J. and Mark Mercer of Dumfries, Va., finished in a tie for second place, each landing on 258, 19 shots behind Rotto.
Stoney added an 89 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 86 before closing with his best round of the weekend, an 83. Mercer bounced back from an opening-round 93 with an 83 in Sunday’s second round before finishing up with an 82.
Sebastian Park of Lansdale was six shots behind Stoney and Mercer in fourth place with a 264 total. Park shaved five shots off his opening-round 91 with an 86 in Sunday’s second round before closing with an 87.
Thomas Luu of Mullica Hill, N.J. finished in fifth place with a 280 total as he added a 93 in Sunday’s second round to his opening-round 93 before closing with a 92.
Ethan Clouser of Newtown bounced back from an opening-round 101 with a 93 in Sunday’s second round before finishing up with a 98 as he ended up in sixth place with a 292 total.
Joe McDonald of Bryn Mawr rounded out the field in the 11-to-13 division as he finished in seventh place with a 298 total. McDonald opened with his best round of the weekend, a 93, before adding a 104 in Sunday’s second round and closing with a 101.
Xunnan Dang of Newtown Square was the only competitor in Under-10 division and he sandwiched a 93 in Sunday’s second round with a pair of 88s for a 269 total. In his final round, Dang made a birdie at the second hole and had three pars on his scorecard.
Abby Lynn, who capped her scholastic career at Central Bucks West by earning a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Championship last fall, won the Girls 14-to-18 division by four shots with a 242 total.
After opening with a 79, Lynn recorded an 83 in Sunday’s second round before closing with an 80. Lynn made back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes and had eight pars on her scorecard in the final round.
Amelia Shen of Demarest, N.J. was the runnerup as she added an 80, her best round of the weekend, in Sunday’s second round to her opening-round 85 before closing with an 81.
Emily Wang of McLean, Va. finished four shots behind Shen in third place with a 250 total. Emily Wang took a one-shot lead over Lynn into the final round after adding an 81 in Sunday’s second round to her opening-round 80, but struggled a little in the final round with an 89.
Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J. took fourth place as she finished up with an 89 after posting back-to-back 85s in the first two rounds for a 259 total.
Julia Vizanko of Ridgewood, N.J. and Sarah Wang, another member of Team Wang out of McLean, Va., finished in a tie for fifth place, each landing on 270.
Vizanko added a 91 in Sunday’s second round to her opening-round 90 before closing with her best round of the weekend, an 89. After opening with a 94, Sarah Wang carded back-to-back 88s in the final two rounds.
Rounding out the field in the Girls 14-to-18 division was Abigail McCorkell of Schwenksville who finished in seventh place, two shots behind Vizanko and Sarah Wang with a 272 total. McCorkell struggled in the first two rounds, opening with a 90 and adding a 100 in Sunday’s second round before hitting her stride in the final round with a solid 82.
Avalise Kim of Alexandria, Va. finished at the top of the leaderboard in the Girls Under-13 division with a 278 total. Kim finished up with a 94 that included three pars on the outgoing nine at Jeffersonville. She had opened with a 95 before adding her best round of the weekend, an 89, in Sunday’s second round.
Rounding out a short field in the Under-13 division was Alexis Baek of Tysons Corner, Va. as she finished four shots behind Kim with a 282 total. Baek shaved five shots off her opening-round 99 with a 94 in Sunday’s second round before closing with her best round of the weekend, an 89.
