Archbishop Carroll senior Matthew Hurchalla had his second strong performance on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s fall schedule as he finished atop the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division with a sparkling 1-under-par 70 at Avalon Golf Club at the Jersey Shore Saturday.
It was one last day of warm fall weather in Avalon Saturday and a large contingent of local junior golfers took full advantage. None more so than Hurchalla, a Wallingford resident, as he made a birdie at the fifth hole and then went back-to-back with birdies at 12 and 13.
Hurchalla had 13 pars on his scorecard, finishing up his round with five straight pars as he toured the incoming nine at Avalon in 1-under 34. Hurchalla had claimed a Philly Junior Tour victory last month with a 1-over 71 at Heidelberg Country Club.
The runnerup at Heidelberg was Hurchalla’s Archbishop Carroll teammate, junior Jake Johnson, and Johnson of Wayne again earned a runnerup finish at Avalon as he shared second place with Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J., each recording a 7-over 78.
Johnson’s steady round featured 12 pars while Forman made birdies on the 12th and 14th holes and had eight pars on his card.
Springfield senior Ben Pintof, coming off a Philly Junior Tour victory last Sunday at Pitman Golf Course, finished alone in fourth place with a 79.
Pintof’s Springfield teammate, senior Jack Morrissey, finished in a tie for fifth place with Brian Cotter of Cherry Hill, N.J., each signing for an 80.
Peter Lafon of Audubon, N.J. took seventh place with an 83, Owen Wise of Downingtown was eighth with an 84, Zachary Freed of Linwood, N.J. was ninth with an 85 and Alex Topping of Philadelphia rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as he finished alone in 10th place with an 86.
Keller Tannehill took a ride down the South Jersey coast from Margate to claim top honors in the 13-to-15 division with an 8-over 79. Tannhehill made birdies on the third and ninth holes and had eight pars on his scorecard.
Daniel Herzchel of Linwood, N.J. made a birdie on the ninth hole and had eight pars on his card as he finished two shots behind Tannehill in second place with an 80. Carson Deringer of Bryn Mawr had nine pars on his card, including a run of five in a row from the eighth through the 12th holes, as he finished in third place with an 82.
Luke Tappeiner of Northfield, N.J. took fourth place with an 85 and Ryan Sun of Morganville, N.J. and Eddie Gebhardt of Swarthmore shared fifth, each posting an 86.
Drake Brogan of Ocean View, N.J. took seventh place with a 90, Will Pendse of Wyndmoor was eighth with a 94, Joseph Gangemi Jr. of Downingtown was ninth with a 97 and Patrick Hiltner of Northfield, N.J. rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division as he finished in 10th place with a 99.
Sophia DeSantis of Glen Mills made a birdie on the 11th hole and had eight pars on her scorecard as she claimed a Philly Junior Tour victory in the girls 16-to-18 division with an 82.
Isabella Magno of Delran, N.J. had seven pars on her card as she rounded out a short field in the division by finishing in second place with an 89.
Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J. matched the low score in the girls divisions with an 82 as her steady round featured 11 pars and left her atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division.
Sarah Stumacher of Gladwyne made birdies at the fifth and 18th holes and had five pars on her scorecard as she was the runnerup with an 85. Mina Benedetto of West Chester had eight pars on her card as she finished in third place with an 86.
Makayla Stone of Garnet Valley took fourth place with a 92, Kasey O’Brien of Linwood, N.J. was fifth with a 108 and Allison Brown of Audubon rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division as she finished sixth with a 127.
Benjamin Allwein of Annville made birdies at the second and sixth holes and had four pars on his scorecard as he bested the field of nine-holers with a solid 1-over 37.
Logan Stoney of Hillsborough, N.J. had five pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors with a 4-over 40. Trebor Melendez of Vineland, N.J., coming off a Philly Junior Tour victory last weekend at Deerfield Golf Club, also had five pars on his card as he finished in third place with a 41.
David Padgett of Barnegat, N.J. took fourth place with a 43, Jameson Foreman of Somers Point, N.J. was fifth with a 47 and Jefferson Allwein, another member of Annville’s Team Allwein, was sixth with a 49.
Reid Tornetta of Collegeville and Jaxson Refold of Bryn Mawr shared seventh place, each carding a 54, Bradan Boal of Woodbine, N.J. was ninth with a 57 and Gabriella Magno, another member of Team Magno from Delran, N.J., rounded out the field in the coed 12-and-under division as she finished in 10th place with a 59.
