Quakertown sophomore Nick Joyce, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, has been at or near the top of the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour leaderboards in the early going of the 2022 season.
Joyce was at it again in Sunday’s Philly Junior Tour stop at the Out Door Country Club in York as he carded a solid 5-over-par 77 to claim the top spot in the 16-to-18 division. Joyce got off to a fast start with a birdie at the third hole and an eagle 2 at the par-4 fifth. He added another birdie at the 13th hole and had six pars on his scorecard as a warm spring day turned wet as the day wore on.
Michael Maslanka of Taylor made a birdie at the 12th hole and had 12 pars on his card as earned runnerup honors with a 78.
Brady Gallagher of Quakertown and Selinsgrove junior Sam Wetmiller, like Joyce a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, finished in a tie for third place, each signing for a 79. Gallagher made birdies at the second and 13th holes and had nine pars on his scorecard. Wetmiller had 12 pars on his card, eight of them on the incoming nine at Out Door as he finished up with a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
Michael Felty, another Selinsgrove entry, took fifth place with an 80, Sean P. Kelly of Lewisburg was sixth with an 81 and Boiling Springs junior Nathaniel Herbst, a PIAA Class AA qualifier last fall, was seventh with an 83.
Rounding out the 16-to-18 field was Grant Novinger of Hummelstown as he finished in eighth place with an 86.
Lawson Leeper of York is moving up this year after regularly contending among the nine-holers and appeared ready for the step up in competition as he finished atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division with a 6-over 78. Leeper had 12 pars on his scorecard, seven of them in a 2-over 38 on Out Door’s outgoing nine.
Lucas Albert of Fort Washington and Luke McGraw of Boalsburg shared second place as each registered an 80. Albert made birdies at the 13th and 18th holes and had eight pars on his card while McGraw had a steady round with 10 pars.
Jacob Gabbard of Lewes, Del. took fourth place with an 82, Joey McGinty of Lititz was fifth with an 83 and Kaden Heckman of Stevens was sixth with an 84.
Luke LaScala of Wilmington, Del., Davis Fairbanks of Swarthmore and Austin Fulton of Carlisle finished in a tie for seventh place, each landing on 85.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division was Matthew Caputo of Swarthmore as he finished alone in 10th place with an 86.
Sophia DeSantis of Glen Mills made birdies on the 12th and 15th holes and had six pars on her scorecard as she claimed a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division with a solid 83.
Geneva Merino of York had three pars on her card as she rounded out a short field among the older girls by finishing in second place with a 98.
Makenna Heckman of Stevens had six pars on her scorecard as she finished atop the 13-to-15 division with a 91.
Hannah Kopac of State College was the runnerup in a short field among the younger girls with a 101 that featured four pars.
Isabelle Studii of Fairfield opened her round with six straight pars as she bested the field of nine-holers with a 4-over 40. Pretty strong showing for a Class of 2028 kid.
David Sivel of Hanover had four pars on his scorecard as he earned runnerup honors with a 5-over 41. Callen Edmonston of Thurmont, Md. and Miles McGinty of Lititz’s Team McGinty finished in a tie for third place, each signing for a 42. Edmonston made a birdie on the second hole and a par on three while McGinty had three pars on his card.
Zachary Proud of Stroudsburg took fifth place with a 43, Alex DiGiacinto of Nazareth was sixth with a 44, Ethan Clouser of Newtown was seventh with a 48 and Scott Campbell of Bel Air, Md. was eighth with a 58.
Tara Griscavage of Mechanicsburg ended up in ninth place with a 62 and Zheng Yan of Malvern rounded out the coed 12-and-under division field, finishing alone in 10th place with a 64.
