Winter kept hanging on a couple of weekends ago, which forced the first two events on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour schedule to be cancelled.
When the 2022 schedule finally did tee off this weekend with a 36-hole Junior Golf Scoreboard event at Seaview Golf Club’s Pines Course in Galloway Township, N.J., Quakertown’s Nick Joyce, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a sophomore last fall, was ready.
The Junior Golf Scoreboard events earn players points that can gain them entry into American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournaments. There is overall scoring for boys and girls from ages 13 to 18 and the Philadelphia Junior Tour also breaks out its usual 16-to-18 and 13-to-15 age groups.
After a really nice mid-March opening round Saturday at Seaview, the weather turned cold and blustery for Sunday’s final round.
Joyce finished with a birdie on the 18th hole in Sunday’s final round to complete a second straight 10-over-par 81 over the par-71 Pines Course layout for a 20-over 162 total that gave him a three-shot victory in the overall scoring as well as in the 16-to-18 division.
Joyce also had nine pars on his scorecard in the second round and went 1-under for his last six holes to seal the victory.
Joyce birdied the second hole and had seven pars as he opened with an 81 Saturday that left him two shots out of the overall lead.
Cole Vineberg of Sparks, Md. had opened with a 79 that gave him the lead in the 16-to-18 division and a share of the overall lead with Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J., who was the leader in the younger 13-to-15 division.
Vineberg’s round featured a birdie at the 12th hole and nine pars. He was forced to withdraw and didn’t post a second-round score, but it was certainly a good start to the season.
Jack Orr of Medford, N.J. matched Joyce’s final-round 81 in Sunday’s tougher conditions after opening with an 84 to finish second in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall scoring with a 23-over 165 total. Orr birdied the 16th hole and had eight pars on his scorecard in Sunday’s final round. His opening-round 84 featured a birdie at the 12th hole and six pars.
Joseph Fargnoli of Mickleton, N.J. and Maxwell Wager of State College finished a shot behind Orr as they shared third place in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall scoring, each landing on 166.
Fargnoli thrived in Sunday’s tough conditions as he registered the best round of the weekend, a 5-over 76 that included birdies at the eighth and 14th holes and eight pars. Fargnoli had six pars in an opening-round 90.
Wager was steady all weekend as he had nine pars in a final-round 82 after making eight pars in an opening-round 84.
Marco Demeo of New Hope and Matthew Dietl of Glenmoore end up in a tie for fifth place in the 16-to-18 division and in a tie for sixth in the overall scoring as each finished with a 168 total.
Demeo was just a shot out of the overall lead with an 80 in the opening round, but he struggled a little in the tougher conditions Sunday, signing for an 88. Dietl opened with an 88, but didn’t seem to mind the wind and cold of Sunday’s final round as he bounced back with an 80 to join Demeo at 168.
A couple of Selinsgrove guys, Michael Felty and Sam Wetmiller, finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the 16-to-18 division.
Felty added an 88 to his opening-round 83 as he shared eighth place in the overall scoring with Sieben from the younger 13-to-15 division with a 171 total. Wetmiller matched Felty’s opening-round 83 before adding an 89 as he rounded out the top 10 in the overall scoring with a 172 total.
Kendell Gordon of Burlington Township, N.J. finished in ninth place in the 16-to-18 division as he added a 92 to an opening-round 88 for a 180 total.
Ehren Wayman of New Hope rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as he added a 94 to his opening-round 89 to finish a shot behind Gordon in 10th place with a 181 total.
Cole Berry of West Chester overtook Sieben to claim the top spot in the 13-to-15 division and climb to fifth place in the overall scoring with a final-round 81 that featured a birdie at the 10th hole and eight pars and gave him a 25-over 167 total. Berry had opened with an 86 that included six pars on his scorecard.
Sunday’s tough conditions proved to be tough on Sieben as he fell back from his opening-round 79 with a 92. Sieben’s 171 total still left him in second place, four shots behind Berry, in the 13-to-15 division and in a tie for eighth in the overall scoring.
Sieben’s solid opening round was highlighted by a birdie at the 15th hole and 10 pars. He struggled in Sunday’s final round, but still made a birdie at the ninth hole.
James Schramek of Chalfont shaved five shots off his opening-round 89 with an 84 in Sunday’s final round to finish in third place in the 13-to-15 division with a 173 total. Schramek birdied the fifth hole and had six pars in his solid second round after making six pars in the opening round.
Daniel Herzchel of Linwood, N.J. added an 86 to his opening-round 88 to finish a shot behind Schramek in fourth place in the 13-to-15 division with a 174 total.
It was another four shots back to Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. as Whitney added an 87 to his opening-round 91 to finish in fifth place in the 13-to-15 division with a 178 total.
Luke Tappeiner of Northfield, N.J. added an 88 to his opening-round 93 to take sixth place in the 13-to-15 division with a 181 total.
The next three spots among the younger guys belonged to Avery O’Neill of Romansville, who took seventh place with a 185 total, Will Walsh of Wayne, who was eighth at 192 and Jackson Bodony of Cedar Run, N.J., who was ninth with a 199 total.
O’Neill added a 94 to his opening-round 91, Walsh shaved six shots off his opening-round 99 with a 93 in Sunday’s final round and Bodony improved from an opening-round 102 with a closing 97.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division was Anderson Braxler of Doylestown as he recorded a pair of 100s to finish in 10th place with a 200 total.
Only two girls teed it up at Seaview, both 13-to-15 division competitors.
Mia Martinez, playing not far from her Little Egg Harbor, N.J. home, was the winner as she added a 97 to her opening-round 92 for a 189 total.
Martinez made pars at the 13th and 15th holes on her way to the clubhouse in Sunday’s final round. She had pars on the 13th and 18th holes in her opening-round 92.
Gaby Becker of Franklin Lakes, N.J. was the runnerup as she added a 105 to her opening-round 99 for a 204 total. Becker had a par on the 15th hole in Sunday’s final round and her opening round was highlighted by a par on four.
Among the nine-holers, Anthony Primo of Marlton, N.J. handled the wind and cold of Sunday’s final round better than anybody as his 7-over 43 enabled him to overtake first-round leader Colby Komancheck of Royersford and capture the title with a 15-over 87 total.
Primo had opened with an 8-over 44, making a birdie on the eighth hole and recording two pars. That left him four shots behind Komancheck, whose parents, Jamie and Kelly, run the pro shop at the RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve.
Primo was steady in the final round with a pair of pars in his 43.
Komancheck had five pars, including four straight from the fourth through the seventh holes, as he grabbed the lead with an opening round of 4-over 40. Komancheck had a par on the fourth hole on his way to a 49 in the second round that left him in second place, two shots behind Primo with a 17-over 89 total.
It was nine shots back to David Padgett of Barneget, N.J. and Winston Chew of Exton, both of whom shared third place, each landing on 98.
Padgett had two pars in a closing 48 after registering a par on the first hole on his way to an opening-round 50. Chew made a par on the third hole on his way to a second straight 49 that earned him his share of third place.
Lucas Solano of Vineland, N.J. shaved six shots off his opening-round 56 with a solid 49 in Sunday’s final round to finish in fifth place with a 105 total.
