The weather kept changing every half-hour or so Saturday, but the game of Strath Haven junior Tyler Debusschere remained steady in the middle of it all.
Debusschere, a District One Class AAA qualifier who helped the Panthers claim the Central League title last fall, made birdies at the eighth, 14th and 18th holes and had 11 pars on his scorecard as he carded a solid 1-over-par 73 at Olde Homestead Golf Club in New Tripoli to capture the top spot in the 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop.
Debusschere was named the Philadelphia Junior Tour’s Player of the Year and won the Scoring Average Award in the 13-to-15 division for the wraparound 2020-2021 season. The Philly Junior Tour’s 2022 season will follow the normal calendar this year and Debusschere is off to a fast start after moving up to the older 16-to-18 division.
In a lot of ways, it was a typical March day with chilly temperatures, a lot of gusty winds and the occasional rain squall, but none of it seemed to bother Debusschere.
It was a day of the Tylers at Olde Homestead as the second- and third-place finishers among the older guys were Tyler Sikorski of Lincoln University and Tyler Hager of Lehighton, respectively.
Sikorski made birdies at the eighth, 12th and 17th holes and had nine pars on his scorecard as he claimed runnerup honors with a 4-over 76 over the par-72 Olde Homestead layout. Hager made birdies on two of Olde Homestead’s par-5s, the eighth and 16th holes, and registered 11 pars as he finished a shot behind Sikorski in third place with a 5-over 77.
Nick Joyce, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a sophomore at Quakertown last fall, took fourth place with a 79. Joyce was coming off a victory in last weekend’s season opener, a 36-hole event held at Seaview Golf Club’s Pines Course at the Jersey Shore.
Gilbertsville’s Marcus Smith, a sophomore at The Hill School, took fifth place with an 82, Aaron Miller of Lehighton was sixth with an 87 and Brett Keenan of Lafayette Hill and Connor Matteo of Drums shared seventh, each landing on 89.
Jack Brennan, a junior at Pope John Paul II, rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as he finished alone in 10th place with a 95.
Anthony Proud of Stroudsburg, one of the many talented youngsters who played so well with the nine-holers last year, moved up to the 13-to-15 division and landed atop the leaderboard in the division with a 4-over 76.
Like Debusschere, Proud was solid in the difficult conditions, making a birdie at the sixth hole and registering 12 pars.
Wyatt Underwood of Telford had 11 pars on his scorecard, rattling off seven in a row from the fifth through the 11th holes, as he earned runnerup honors with an 80. Austin Zweizig of Mohrsville birdied the 12th hole and had six pars on his card as he took third place with an 86.
Austin Fulton of Carlisle finished in fourth place with a 92, Chase Andrews of Harleysville was fifth with a 99 and Vyom Shukla of Berwyn and Nichlas Skjeveland of Jamison ended up in a tie for sixth, each landing on 101.
Anderson Brexler of Doylestown took eighth place with a 104, Joseph Solt of Kunkletown was ninth with a 106, Collin Schreiber, another Kunkletown guy, was 10th with a 111 and Grayson Levy of New Hope rounded out the 13-to-15 field as he finished alone in 11th place with a 116.
Conestoga sophomore Brynne Mushlin put together a solid 86 to capture the top spot in the girls 16-to-18 division. Mushlin, who finished in a tie for fifth place in the Central League Championship at Turtle Creek Golf Club last fall to earn a trip to the District One Class AAA Championship, had 10 pars on her scorecard at Olde Homestead.
Oley Valley junior Heidi Wegscheider rounded out the 16-to-18 division field as she was the runnerup to Mushlin with a 112. A par at the 17th hole highlighted Wegscheider’s round.
Kayla Benson of Beach Lake carded a 98 to win the title in the 13-to-15 division. Benson birdied the 15th hole and had four pars on the back nine as she posted a solid 41 on Olde Homestead’s incoming nine.
Camryn Hoff of Nazareth rounded out the 13-to-15 division field as she was the runnerup to Benson with a 121 that featured a par on the first hole.
Holden Sparks of Nazareth and Ian Rotto of Kennett Square shared top honors among the nine-holers as each landed on 9-over 44. Sparks had three pars on his scorecard while Rotto made birdie at the second hole and also had three pars.
Carter Hippauf of Quakertown made a par on the eighth hole on his way to a 48 that left him alone in third place.
J.D. Sivel of Hanover and Alex DiGiacinto of Nazareth finished in a tie for fourth place, each signing for a 50. John Shea of Harleysville rounded out the coed 12-and-under division field as he finished alone in sixth place with a 58.
