Grant Urie of Kennett Square and Owen Wisner of Reading wrapped up the 2020-2021 Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour schedule on a winning note as each carded a 9-over-par 81 at Shore Gate Golf Club in Ocean View, N.J. Sunday to share top honors in the 16-to-18 division.
It was a cold and windy weekend at the Jersey Shore and the higher scores reflected that. Urie made birdies at the eighth and 16th holes and had eight pars on his scorecard. Urie closed strong, going 1-under for his last three holes.
Wisner made a birdie at the sixth hole and had eight pars on his card. Wisner successfully overcame the tough conditions all weekend, earning runnerup honors in Saturday’s Philly Junior Tour stop at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point before sharing the top spot with Urie at the par-72 Shore Gate layout Sunday.
Owen Fahs of Nazareth, Alexander McCauley of Maple Glen and Ben Gehrt, another Kennett Square entry, all finished a shot behind the two co-medalists as they ended up in a tie for third place, each posting a 10-over 82.
Fahs opened his round with a birdie at the first hole and had eight pars on his scorecard, McCauley had nine pars, six of them on Shore Gate’s outgoing nine, and Gehrt had 11 pars, including five straight to open the back nine from the 10th through 15th holes.
Luke Weller of Reading and Michael Felty of Selinsgrove finished in a tie for sixth place, each signing for an 85. Jacob Brady of Newark, Del. and David Birmingham of Reading shared eighth place, each registering a 90.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division were Evan Rydel of Glen Mills and Jack Blackmore of Philadelphia as they finished in a tie for 10th place, each carding a 92.
Luke Tappeiner of Northfield, N.J. matched the 81s posted by Urie and Wisner as he bested a short field of competitors in the 13-to-15 division.
Tappeiner made birdies at the 13th and 18th holes and had nine pars on his scorecard. Like Urie, Tappeiner finished strong, going 1-under for his last three holes. Like Wisner, Tappeiner capped a solid weekend at the Jersey Shore as he earned a runnerup finish in Saturday’s Philly Junior Tour stop at Greate Bay.
Brent Glah of Ambler rounded out the field of younger guys as he was the runnerup to Tappeiner with an 87. Glah’s round featured a birdie at the 14th hole and four pars.
Sophia DeSantis of Glen Mills claimed her second win of the weekend as her 95 left her atop the leaderboard in the girls 13-to-15 division. DeSantis made a birdie at the 16th hole and had five pars on her scorecard. She was the co-medalist in the 13-to-15 division in Saturday’s Philly Junior Tour stop at Greate Bay.
Mina Benedetto of West Chester birdied the 11th hole and had three pars on her card as she was the runnerup to DeSantis with a 101. Isabella Magno of Delran, N.J. made pars at the 16th and 18th holes on her way to a 108 as she rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division with a third-place finish.
Give DeSantis, Benedetto and Magno credit for sticking it out the whole weekend, teeing it up and Greate Bay and Shore Gate in tough conditions at the Jersey Shore.
Onyu Park of Blue Bell completed a weekend sweep of the coed 12-and-under division with a 3-over 39 that featured a birdie at the seventh hole and four pars. Park bested the nine-holers in Saturday’s Philly Junior Tour stop at Greate Bay.
Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. was the runnerup to Park for the second day in a row as he had five pars on his scorecard on his way to a 4-over 40. Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. also had five pars on his card as he finished a shot behind Whitney in third place with a 5-over 41.
