In a busy week for junior golfers, some of them teamed up
with a Philadelphia Section PGA pro in the Section’s Pro-Junior Championship
Wednesday at Applecross Country Club off Route 322 in West Brandywine Township,
Chester County.
It was a shotgun start at high noon and when the numbers
were all counted, the Llanerch Country Club pair of Jared Murosky and Haverford
High sophomore Riley Quartermain topped the net division with a sparkling
12-under-par 60 over the 6,440-yard, par-72 Applecross layout.
Scoring was better-ball of partners with junior players
getting 80 percent of his or her handicap. Quartermain had a solid freshman
season at Haverford, earning a trip to the girls District One Class AAA
Championship.
The father-son team of The Country Club at Woodloch Springs
director of golf John Pillar and Alex Pillar finished four shots behind the
winners in second at 8-under 64. The Sunnybrook Golf tandem of Branden Allen and T.J. Robertson finished
third, posting a 7-under 65.
Another father-son duo, Spring-Ford Country Club head pro
Rich Steinmetz and Hill School senior Drew
Steinmetz, got a share of fourth with a 6-under 66. Joining Team
Steinmetz in the tie for fourth was the Rolling Green Golf Club pair of Scott
Chisholm and Kathleen Mark, coming off a freshman season this spring in which
she was a key contributor during Episcopal Academy’s Inter-Ac League
championship run.
John Cooper and John Cooper of Green Valley Country Club –
likely another father-son pair – headed a group of three teams that finished
tied for seventh at 5-under 67.
Don Allan and Tanner Cole of Burlington Country Club and
Chris Krueger and Sawyer Brockstedt of Kings Creek Country Club joined Green
Valley’s Team Cooper in the group tied for seventh at 67. Brockstedt represented
Delaware earlier this year when she finished tied for fourth in the 10-and-11
age group in the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National
Golf Club the Sunday of Masters week.
Team Pillar from The Country Club at Woodloch Springs finished
first in the gross scoring with a 7-under 65.
The winners of the net division, Llanerch’s Murosky and
Quartermain, and Spring-Ford’s Team Steinmetz were among four teams that shared
second place in the gross scoring at 4-under 68.
Joining them in the tie for second were M Golf Range head of
instruction Stu Ingraham and Devon Prep sophomore Ryan McCabe and Linfield
National Golf Club head pro Robert Kleckner and Joshua Ryan, who will represent
Norristown High as a sophomore this fall.
McCabe and Ryan were two of the top freshmen in District One
last fall with McCabe capturing the District One Class AA individual crown and
leading Devon Prep to the district team crown and Ryan earning a trip to the
PIAA Class AAA Championship.
