Win Thomas of Unionville keeps doing things on the golf
course that you wouldn’t think a kid going into eighth grade should be able to
do.
The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stopped at
Wilmington Country Club’s North Course Monday. It’s a tough course. The wind
was blowing. None of it seemed to bother Thomas. He was 2-under with a
front-nine 33 and ended up with four birdies on his way to a 2-over 73 over the
6,299-yard, par-71 North Course layout that gave him the top spot in the
13-to-15 division.
Strath Haven sophomore Jackson Debusschere, Haverford School
sophomore Jake Maddaloni and Jack Davis of Newtown Square shared second place,
each carding 78, five shots behind Thomas.
Anthony Ciconte of Wilmington, Del; finished alone in fifth
with a 79. Matthew Homer of Wilmington’s Team Homer, and Luke Watson of
Royersford finished tied for sixth, each posting an 80.
Ryan McCabe, the District One Class AA champion as a
freshman at Devon Prep last fall, and Eli Shah of Newtown Square shared eighth
place at 81 and Luke Kelly of Wayne and Evan Barbin of the golfing Barbins of
Elkton, Md. rounded out the top 10 in a tie for 10th at 82.
Haverford School senior Peter Garno, a key member of the
Fords’ Inter-Ac League champions last fall, took top honors in the 16-to-18
division in a scorecard playoff after he finished tied for first with Caleb
Ryan of Norristown and Colton Murray of Sewell, N.J. as each carded a 6-over
77.
Garno’s 34 on the back nine gave him the tiebreaker edge.
Ryan, who has qualified for the PIAA Class AAA Championship each of the last
two season representing Norristown High, took second with a 38 on the back nine
and Murray’s back-nine 39 left him in third.
Two more players were a shot back in a tie for fourth as
Nick Martin of Audubon and Jackson Paradee of Dover, Del. each posted a 78. It
was another shot back to Nicholas Covey of Easton, Md. and David King of
Cincinnati, Ohio in a tie for sixth at 79.
Dylan Gooneratne, a District One Class AAA qualifier as a
freshman at Plymouth-Whitemarsh last fall, and Liam Caspar of Williamstown,
N.J. finished in a tie for eighth, each signing for an 80.
Rounding out the top 10 were three players – Benton Stewart
of Wyndmoor, Nathan Potts of Wilmington and Brian Pelose of Haddonfield, N.J. –
tied for 10th at 81.
Gabbie Puspoki dropped in from Pleasanton, Calif. and
captured top honors in the girls 16-to-18 division with an 86. Cassie Puspoki,
also of Pleasanton so probably Gabbie’s sister – and both are scheduled to
graduate next spring so possibly twins – finished tied for fifth with a 91.
Unionville sophomore Charlotte Scully and Christina Carroll
of Bear, Del., shared runnerup honors, each carding an 88. Abigail Han of
Hummelstown finished alone in fourth with a 90. Sharing fifth with Cassie
Puspoki at 92 was Olivia Schwandt of Wilmington.
Anna McCormick of Harrisburg finished seventh with a 92,
Caitlyn Hagerty of Glen Mills was eighth with a 98 and Marple Newtown junior
Gillyoung Koh was ninth with a 102.
Leah Walter of West Chester took top honors in the 13-to-15
division with a 90. Paige Richter of Camp Hill was the runnerup with a 92.
Niosha Parvizi of Gladwyne took third with a 94, Julia Li of
Hockessin, Del. was fourth with a 95, Mary Grace Dunigan of Kennett Square was
fifth with a 98 and another member of West Chester’s Team Walter, Sophie
Walter, was sixth with a 104.
Sawyer Brockstedt, the talented youngster from Rehoboth
Beach, Del., struggled with a 52 in a ninth-place finish among the nine-holers
in a Junior Tour stop at Kennett Square Golf & Country Club last week. But
Brockstedt, who finished tied for fourth in the girls 10-to-11 age group in the
Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday
before the Masters, didn’t stay down for long.
Brockstedt had her best nine of the year on the Junior Tour,
a 4-over 39, to take top honors among the nine-holers. She somehow managed to
deny Nicholas Gross of Downingtown a victory as Gross, who won three times on
the Junior Tour last week, settled for a runnerup finish with a 40.
It was a pretty strong day all the way around for the
nine-holers – these kids are sixth-, seventh-, eighth-graders – as 12 of them
broke 50 at the North Course.
A couple of Wilmington entries, Michael Dignazio and Avery
McCrery, shared third place, each carding a 42. Jason DiRita of Media finished
alone in fifth with a 44.
Jack Homer of Wilmington’s Team Homer and Gillian Gaughan of
Avondale shared sixth place, each posting a 45. Daniel Shin of Horsham took
eighth with a 46 and Joseph Ciconte of Wilmington was ninth with a 47.
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting’s Team Gooneratne and
Jax Puskar finished tied for 10th at 48 and Evan Gross of
Downingtown’s Team Gross was 12th with a 49.
There were divisions for the older guys and gals up for
grabs at Wilmington Monday as well and Joshua Madarang of Chester Springs was
an impressive winner of the men’s 17-to-24 division with a 1-over 72 that
included a 35 on the front nine.
Jimmy Gillespie of Glen Mills was the runnerup with an 80,
T.J. Prushinski of Bear, Del. was third with an 85, Ryan McHugh of Yorklyn,
Del. was fourth with an 87 and Ryan Barley of Mt. Laurel, N.J. was fifth with
an 89.
Emma Harding of Tunkhannock was the lone entry in the
women’s 17-to-24 division and carded a solid 88.
