The college career of Georgetown’s Cole Berman that began
with a bang in the summer of 2014 when he captured the individual title in the
Navy Fall Classic is dwindling down to a final few events in the spring of his
senior season.
Berman helped the Hoyas win the Big East crown two years
ago, earning them a trip to the NCAA’s Franklin Regional. He finished tied for
third at the conference tournament that year.
It looks like The Haverford School product and 2015 BMW Philadelphia Amateur champion plans to finish his
college career with a flourish. Berman fired a 4-under-par 68 on the Raven and
Falcon nines at Osprey Point Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla. Sunday to help
Georgetown surge to a fifth-place finish in the FAU Spring Championship, the
opener to the spring campaign for the Hoyas.
Berman’s 68 was one of three fired by Georgetown players, as
Eduardo Blochtein, a sophomore from Delray Beach, Fla., and Sam Madsen, a
senior from Madison, Wis., matched Berman’s total around the 6,786-yard, par-72
Raven and Falcon nines.
Georgetown carded a sizzling 12-under 276 in Sunday’s final
round to move up four spots and finish fifth in the 19-team field at 7-under
857. It was the second-best team score of the day behind the remarkable
16-under 272 by team champion Lynn, the No. 6 team in the country in Division
II. Lynn is based in Boca Raton.
The Fighting Knights opened with a 7-under 281 in Friday’s
first round and added a 15-under 273 in Saturday’s second round before doing
that one better Sunday for a 38-under 826 total. Some of these Florida Division
II schools are really good at golf.
Connecticut, which opened with a scorching 15-under 273,
cooled off a little with rounds of 3-under 285 and 1-under 287 to finish second
with an impressive 19-under 845 total. Jacksonville State fired a 9-under 279
in Saturday’s middle round before finishing up with a 7-under 281 to finish
third at 14-under 850, five shots behind UConn.
Houston Baptist capped a steady three days with a 2-under
286 to finish a shot behind Jacksonville State in fourth at 13-under 851.
Georgetown opened with a 3-under 285 and struggled in Saturday’s middle round
with a 296 before the strong finish enabled the Hoyas to move up to fifth, six
shots behind Houston Baptist.
All five players in the Lynn lineup finished in the top 10,
led by Carlos Bustos, a sophomore from Chile, who was the runnerup by a shot behind
the individual champion, UConn’s Jimmy Hervol, a junior from Hopinton, Mass.
Bustos opened with a 1-over 73, then stormed home with an
8-under 64 Saturday and a 7-under 65 Sunday for a 14-under 202 total. Teammate
Manuel Torres, a senior from Venezuela, finished four shots behind Bustos in a
tie for third at 10-under 206. Torres opened with a 70 and added a pair of 68s.
Felix Kvarnstrom, a sophomore from Sweden, also finished up
with a 68 to finish alone in ninth for the Fighting Knights at 5-under 211.
Rounding out the lineup for Lynn were Tonto Gana, a sophomore from Chile, and
Jorge Villar, a freshman from Mexico, both of whom ended up in the group tied
for 10th at 4-under 212.
So, the final round for Lynn included Bustos’ 65, Torres’
68, Kvarnstrom’s 68 and the two 71s by Gana and Villar -- under par each and
every one of them.
Hervol made it clear he had designs on the individual title
when he opened with a sizzling 8-under 64. He added a 5-under 67 before
finishing up with a 2-under 70 to get that individual crown with a 15-under 201
total.
Jacksonville State’s Jesus Dario Montenegro, a freshman from
Argentina, got a share of third with Lynn’s Torres at 10-under 206 with a
weekend that included a 6-under 66 in Saturday’s second round.
Rounding out the top five was Hartford’s Ambrose
Abbracciomento, a sophomore from Washington Crossing who was a shot behind
Montenegro and Torres in fifth at 9-under 207. It looks like Abbracciomento
played high school golf in the Bicentennial League while attending the
Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School. He played some pretty good golf at
Osprey Point, including an opening-round of 5-under 66.
Berman and Blochtein led the way for Georgetown, finishing
among the group tied for 10th at 4-under 212.
Berman, part of the deep stable of talent playing out of
Philadelphia Cricket Club, had a pair of even-par 72s before finishing up with his
68. Blochtein opened with a 2-under 70 and added a 1-over 74 before his
final-round 68.
Madsen’s 68 moved him into a tied for 24th at
1-under 215. He opened with an even-par 72 and added a 3-over 75 before his
final-round 68.
Jack Musgrave, a senior from Chesterton, Ind. and part of
Georgetown’s run to the Big East title along with Berman and Madsen in 2014,
finished tied for 58th at 6-over 222 after a final-round 76.
Patrick DiPasquale, a sophomore from Rochester, N.Y.,
finished in a tie for 91st at 228, but his final round of even-par
72 was the final counter for the Hoyas behind the trio of 68s.
