Isabella DiLisio, the 2013 PIAA Class AAA champion as a
junior at Mount St. Joseph, fired a final round of 5-under-par 67 as she opened
her junior season at Notre Dame with a top-10 finish that helped the Irish
finish tied for third in the Minnesota Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday
at Prestwick Golf Club in Woodbury, Minn.
DiLisio opened with a 3-under 69 over the 6,248-yard, par-72
Prestwick layout in Monday’s double-round and fell back with a 75 in the
afternoon before finishing with a flourish. DiLisio’s final-round 67, which
matched individual co-champion Inez Wanamarta, a freshman at Purdue from
Indonesia, for the low round of the day, gave her a 5-under 211 total that left
her in a tie for 10th.
The Irish were led by Emma Albrecht, a junior from Ormand
Beach, Fla. who was invited to the NCAA regionals as an individual last spring.
Albrecht opened with a 68 and added rounds of 72 and 70 to finish a shot better
than DiLisio in a tie for seventh at 6-under 210.
Albrecht and DiLisio head an experienced group in South Bend
that will be trying to build a strong enough resume to earn Susan Holt’s Irish
an invitation to the NCAA regionals next spring.
Southern California, long on talent but short on depth,
rolled to the team title in the Minnesota Invitational with a 26-under 836
total, highlighted by a spectacular 12-under 276 in Monday afternoon’s second
round.
The Trojans, who reached the semifinals of the NCAA
Championship at Rich Harvest Farms last spring, were led by Muni He, a
sophomore from San Diego who shared the individual title with Purdue’s
Wanamarta at 10-under 206.
Big Ten power Michigan State finished alone in second at
17-under 845. The Spartans had a sizzling start with rounds of 9-under 279 and
10-under 278 in Monday’s double-round that actually gave them a one-shot lead
over USC before cooling off with a final round of 2-over 290.
DiLisio’s strong finish enabled Notre Dame to post a final
round of 7-under 281 and gave the Irish a share of third with another Big Ten
entry, Purdue, at 10-under 854.
Purdue finished just outside of the eight teams that made
match play in last spring’s NCAA Championship and lost a likely future LPGA
player in August Kim, although the spectacular debut by Wanamarta at the top of
a very capable and experienced lineup would seem to indicate Devin Brouse’s
Boilermakers will be setting their sights pretty high this season.
Purdue had steady rounds of 5-under 283, 3-under 285 and
2-under 286 to put together its 854 total.
A third Big Ten representative, Wisconsin, finished tied for
fifth with Louisville at 9-under 855. The Badgers finished up with a 6-under
282 while the Cardinals, who opened with a spectacular 12-under 276, had a
final round of 3-over 291.
Also for the Irish, Maddie Rose Hamilton, a junior from
Louisville, Ky., finished tied for 31st at 2-over 218 after a final
round of 1-under 71, Abby Heck, a freshman from Memphis, Tenn., finished tied
for 36th at 3-over 219 after a final-round 75, and DeLisio’s Mount
St. Joseph teammate, Alison Snakard, a senior form Collegeville, finished tied
for 66th at 227.
Snakard started slowly with an 81, but carded back-to-back
73s. Later in the week Snakard was named the team captain. She was also the
captain of the 2013 Mount St. Joseph team that captured the PIAA Class AAA team
title a day after DiLisio won the individual crown.
Southern Cal’s He opened with a 2-under 70, added a 5-under
67 and finished up with a 3-uneder 69 to get her share of the individual title
at 10-under 206. Teammate Robynn Ree, a junior from Redondo Beach, Calif.,
finished tied for third at 8-under 208.
Ree, a quarterfinalist in last month’s U.S. Women’s Amateur
at San Diego Country Club, had rounds of 71, 68 and 69.
Also for the Trojans, Alyaa Abdulghany, a freshman from
Newport Beach, Calif., had a solid collegiate debut, carding a final round of
1-under 71 to finish tied for 14th at 4-under 212. Allison Corpuz, a
sophomore from Honolulu, Hawaii, finished tied for 17th at 2-under
214 after a final-round 71 and Divya Manthena, a sophomore from Moorpark,
Calif., finished tied for 46th at 222 after a final-round 76.
Purdue’s Wanamarta had that final-round 67 to finish at
10-under 206 and catch He for her share of the individual title.
Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri, a junior from Indonesia, gave
Purdue another top-10 finisher as she ended up in the group tied for seventh at
6-under 210 after opening up with a solid 4-under 68. Covadonga Sanjuan, a
junior from Spain, finished tied for 31st at 2-over 218, Micaela Farah,
a sophomore from Peru, finished tied for 46th at 222 after a final -round 75 and Marta Martin, a senior
from Spain finished tied for 50th at 223 after a final-round 76.
Sharing third in the individual standings with USC’s Ree at
8-under 208 was Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Bose, who opened with a 6-under 66.
Michigan State’s Paz Marfa Sans, a sophomore from Spain, and
Louisville’s Lauren Hartlage, a sophomore form Elizabethtown, Ky. finished tied
for fifth at 7-under 209. Marfa Sans fired a 6-under 66 in Monday’s second
round while Hartlage had rounds of 68 and 69 in Monday’s double-round.
Sharing seventh place with Notre Dame’s Albrecht and Purdue’s
Melati Putri at 6-under 210 was Michigan State’s Sarah Burnham, a senior from
Maple Grove, Minn. Burnham, never afraid to go low, matched her teammate Marfa
Sans with a sizzling 6-under 66 in Monday’s second round that fueled the
Spartans’ 10-under 278 in the middle round.
