Dolan, Svigals earn spots in Pennsylvania Open field

With the Pennsylvania Open scheduled to be held Aug. 10-12 at Rolling Green Golf Club, there were a lot of Delco players with an eye on earning a spot in the field at the William Flynn classic in Springfield when a qualifier was staged July 16 at Radnor Valley Country Club.
And a number of them did indeed earn the right to tee it up in the Pennsylvania Open,  including three players with Rolling Green ties who got in right on the number at 4-over 74.
Quinn Dolan, the two-time Bonner-Prendergast All-Delco, is headed for his freshman year at Notre Dame, but he’ll get a shot at playing on his home course in the Pennsylvania Open after just getting in with his 74 at Radnor Valley. Joining him at that number were fellow Rolling Green member Matthew Bastian and, representing the pro shop at Rolling Green, Chris Hoyle, a member of Haverford High’s powerful golf teams under Tom Lallone in the mid-1990s.
Former Episcopal High standout Bobby Svigals, who completed a solid career at Franklin & Marshall last spring, had the home-course advantage at Radnor Valley and fired a 1-over 71 to finish in a tie for fourth, two shots back of qualifying medalist John Barrone of Dunmore.
Media’s John Allen, who is working out of the Huntingdon Valley Country Club pro shop, and Broomall’s T. Jay Fairlie were also in the group with Svigals at 1-over 71. Radnor High All-Delco Carey Bina, like Svigals a Radnor Valley member, got in with 72. Another All-Delco, Marple Newtown’s Sam Soeth, was also in the group at 72, along with Aronimink Golf Club’s Michael Davis, the former Malvern Prep standout who was the runnerup to Cole Berman in the Philadelphia Amateur earlier this summer.
Soeth spent a year in the golf management program at Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C., but was not on the golf team. Sounds like he’s planning to scratch his competitive itch by coming home to join Brian Quinn’s program at Temple. Soeth mentioned that possibility at the Philadelphia Amateur earlier this summer and likely future teammate Brandon Matthews said Soeth was headed to North Broad Street after Matthews won his second Philadelphia Open title at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course last week.
Overbrook Golf Club pro Eric Kennedy didn’t have far to travel to make the Pennsylvania Open field as he carded a 73 across Route 320 from Overbrook at Radnor Valley.
Svigals and Dolan were at it again earlier this week as they earned spots in the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s final major of the season, the Patterson Cup, in a qualifier Monday at Whitford Country Club.  The Patterson Cup will be held Aug. 6 and 7 at Chester Valley Golf Club, once the site of a regular Champions Tour stop.
Svigals matched par at Whitford with a 72 to finish in a tie for third. Millersville senior Robby Rowe claimed medalist honors with a 3-under 69 and Edgmont Country Club’s Nick Calabrese finished alone in second with a 1-under 71.
Joining Svigals at 72 were Michael Rogers of Overbrook and Peter Bradbeer of Merion Golf Club. Overbrook veteran Oscar Mestre was at 74. The group at 75 included Rolling Green’s Dolan, Bradbeer’s brother J.B. and Overbrook’s Mac Ryan, Dolan’s former Catholic League rival at St. Joseph’s Prep.
Making the cut for the Patterson Cup right on the number at 4-over 76 were Erik Reisner, the two-time Central League champion at Harriton, and Fraser Graham of Rolling Green.
Berman, the two-time Daily Times Player of the Year at Haverford School, will be the defending Patterson Cup champion.  After winning the title a couple of months after graduating from Haverford School, Berman went on to win his first collegiate start at Georgetown and then came home this summer and earned a second GAP major by capturing the BMW Philadelphia Amateur crown at Llanerch Country Club.
