We ran a brief roundup in the Daily Times from the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the Villanova
golf team at White Manor Country Club, but that never seems to do justice to an
event that always seems to get caught in the last gasp of winter, making for
some challenging conditions.
And this year’s edition was no different. Day 1 Monday was
played on a downright cold day while things warmed up a little on Day 2,
although play was delayed at the start by, you guessed it, frost. And just as
an added bonus, the players got rained on a little at the end.
All of which makes the 4-under 67 that Lehigh’s Billy Johns,
a freshman from Georgia, shot in the
second round all the more impressive. Johns had six birdies, including three
straight on 10, 11 and 12, and two bogeys in a round that earned him the
individual title.
Johns got it around in 2-over 73 in Monday’s cold weather
and his 2-under 140 total gave him a one-shot victory over Delaware’s Jack
Gianinny (71-70).
The host Wildcats were led by some of their youngsters in
finishing 11th in the team chase with a 617 total. Villanova
actually had a nice start with a 304 in tough conditions in the opening round
before falling back to a 313 in the second round.
Villanova was led by Lucas Trim, a sophomore from Tampa,
Fla. who matched par with an opening-round 71 before stumbling on Day 2 with a
79 to finish in a tie for 24th at 8-over 150. Zach Egermayer, a
freshman from Glen Rock, N.J., was the second –best finisher for Villanova with
a pair of 76s that left him in a tie for 40th at 152.
Rounding out Villanova’s top five were Luke Waggoner, a
junior from Crystal Lake, Ill. who had a pair of 78s to finish in a tie for 53rd
at 156, Andy Butler, a freshman from Oakmont, Pa. who had rounds of 79 and 80
to finish in a tie for 63rd at 159 and Scott Miller, a senior from
Madison, N.J. who had rounds of 88 and 82 to finish 91st at 170.
Senior Ted Brennan, who was a Haverford School standout,
competed as an individual and posted rounds of 83 and 79 for a 162 total. Also
competing as an individual for the host Wildcats was Will Byne, a freshman from
McLean, Va. who fired a 3-over 74 in the second round for a solid 160 total.
Binghamton won the team title as the Bearcats fired a
sizzling 3-under 281 total on Day 2, which, combined with an opening-round 300,
gave them a 581 total and a three-shot edge on Delaware (294-290).
Binghamton was led by Josh Holling, who finished tied for
third individually at 1-over 143, and Jack Sedgewick, who fired a second-round
68 to get a share of eighth at 3-over 145.
Two city schools, Drexel (297-294) and Saint Joseph’s
(295-296) shared third place at 591.
Drexel was led by former Holy Ghost Prep standout Chris
Crawford, a junior who finished seventh with rounds of 71 and 73 for a 2-over
144 total. St. Joe’s was led by former Central Bucks West standout T.J.
Summers, a junior who had had rounds of 73 and 70 and was in the group tied for
third at 1-over 143.
La Salle (301-292) finished sixth with sophomore PJ Acierno,
who starred scholastically at La Salle, leading the way with rounds of 75 and
70 that left him a tie for eighth at 3-over 145.
Berman springs into action
Cole Berman, the two-time Daily Times Player of the Year at Haverford School, picked up right
where he left off last fall as the spring portion of his freshman season at
Georgetown got under way.
The Hoyas headed for warmer climes and teed it up in the FAU
Slomin Autism Invite at the Fountains Country Club’s North Course last weekend
and Berman was their low man. The reigning Golf Association of Philadelphia
Patterson Cup winner, Berman matched par on the final day with a 71 for a 217
total that left him in 12th place in the 54-hole event.
Berman’s round led Georgetown to its second straight 298
team total as the Hoyas finished in a tie for 12th in the
competitive field with an 890 total.
Sam Madsen, a classmate of Berman’s out of Madison, Wis.,
was the Hoyas’ second-best finisher, a shot back of Berman at 5-over 218 in a
tie for 15th.
