An eagle putt on the 72nd hole and a three-hole
playoff between two of the very best American players in the women’s game.
The ANA Inspiration – sorry, it will always be the Dinah
Shore to me – put on its usual show in the California desert in the first major
championship for women’s golf in 2015 that concluded Sunday. Brittany Lincicome
needed to make eagle on the 18th hole at Rancho Mirage and she did
just that and ended up in a playoff with Stacy Lewis.
They played the 18th hole three more times and
Lincicome finally prevailed with a par to win the Dinah Shore for a second time.
TV scheduling being what it is, the finish didn’t happen until 10 p.m. Eastern
time and they almost ran out of daylight in Cali.
But if you watched any of the Dinah Shore over the weekend
and saw all those great players, you might be interested in seeing them in
person and you can do that when women’s professional major championship golf
comes to Lancaster Country Club for the U.S. Women’s Open in July.
Tournament officials announced last week that daily tickets
for practice rounds Monday through Wednesday, July 6 to 8, or for championship
rounds Thursday through Sunday, July 9 to 12, are now being made available.
They always like to sell as many “season” tickets for an
event like this as they can. But if you couldn’t commit to the whole week, but would
like to take a day trip out to the U.S. Women’s Open on a specific day, that
opportunity is now available.
“Our plan was to release a number of daily tickets for people
throughout the region who are interested in only daily tickets because they
want to make a day trip to the championship,” said Barry Deach, championship director
for the U.S. Women’s Open. “Many of them even plan to take public
transportation because of the convenience. Due to demand, we’ll monitor the
number of daily tickets sold very closely and we will adjust inventory as
needed to ensure our commitment to a major championship experience is consistent.”
It wasn’t that long ago that we had women’s major
championship golf in our backyard every year when the LPGA Championship was
held at Wilmington Country Club. Saw Juli Inkster finish eagle, birdie, birdie
to win the LPGA Championship one year. If Tiger Woods ever finished eagle,
birdie, birdie to win a major championship, it would be called the greatest
three holes in the history of golf. Well, Juli Inkster did it and it was pretty
special.
Speaking of special, there are so many good women players
out there right now from all over the world, the women’s game has never been
more compelling. So, plan a day trip out to Lancaster County and watch them
play.
