The 12th annual Harry Hammond Invitational,
played at the Penn Oaks Golf Club at which the tournament’s namesake is the
Director of Golf, is one of the most prestigious stops on the Philadelphia
Section PGA Junior Tour schedule.
One of the reasons for that is the top three finishers in
the boys and girls divisions earn $1,000 scholarships toward their college
educations.
And Garnet Valley junior Annika Vandayar picked up a little
down payment on her future plans by finishing second in the girls division with
an 82 over the challenging 5,945-yard, par-71 Penn Oaks layout Monday.
Lacey Bensing of Ephrata finished first with an 80 and
Selena Cerra of Falls Township finished third with an 85.
The boys scholarship winners were Mike Bliss (73) of
Newtown, Connor Sheehan (74) of Quarryville and C.J. Zachary of Hummelstown
(74). Sheehan and Zachary won a playoff over two other players to earn the
final two scholarship spot.
Garnet Valley senior Jack Highfill had a 79 to finish in a
tie for 12th and Jaguars junior Michael Stanilka had an 87 to finish
in a tie for 27th.
Another big week for Kim
Incoming Radnor freshman Gabriella Kim continued her strong
play this summer as she fired an 86 to finish second in the 13-to-15 division
in a Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour stop at Tavistock C.C. Wednesday.
Kim finished five shots back of division winner Esther Park
of Wilmington, Del.
In the boys 13-to-15 division, Jack Hirsh of Villanova

Kim was right back at it Thursday, posting an 8-over 79 at
the 5,501-yard, par-71 Raven’s Claw Golf Club layout to finish first in the
13-to-15 division. Kim had a birdie on her way to her fifth victory of the year
on the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour circuit.
In the girls 16-to-18 division, Episcopal Academy senior
Ashley Mauch finished fifth with a 102.
In the boys 13-to-15 division at Raven’s Claw, Michael
Sydnes bested the field with a 4-over 75. Sydnes had three birdies in posting
his low round of the 2013 season. Villanova’s Hirsh and Nathan Guerrini of
Collegeville were another shot back in a tie for second at 76.
Other finishers in the division included Jack Bellwoar (84,
tied for ninth) of Newtown Square, Jacob Calamaro (85, tied for 13th),
Bryn Mawr’s Nichols (86, tied for 18th), and Matthew Hoppe (102, 29th)
of Garnet Valley.
Jack Henderson of Wayne ripped off five straight birdies on
the front nine on his way to a 2-under 69 that gave him top honors in the
16-to-18 division.
Other top finishers in the division included John Miller
(78, tied for fifth) of Wayne and Harry Bellwoar (88, 20th) of
Newtown Square.
Among the nine-holers, Dolan Cox of Newtown Square was
fourth with a 43, James Quinn of Radnor was seventh with a 48, D.J. Colleran of
Radnor and Wayne Blatchford of Wayne were among four players tied for ninth at
51, and June Kim of Wayne finished in a tie for 14th with a 55.
McDermott-Gravina Jr., Cornley-Jarmas pairs
finish tied for
second in Sezna
The Deeg Sezna Four-Ball holds a special place on the Golf
Association of Philadelphia calendar because it honors mentoring and the memory
of its namesake who died on the 104th floor of the World Trade
Center’s South Tower Sept. 11, 2001.
Deeg Sezna was in his sixth day of his first job after
graduating from Vanderbilt when he died. He had always been a mentor to his two
younger brothers. It was in that spirit that his father Davis Sezna established
this event in which a younger player is paired with an older player whom he
considers a mentor. The younger player must be 21 or younger and there must be
at least a 10-year age difference between the partners.
Merion Golf Club’s Michael McDermott, five-time winner of
GAP’s William Hyndman III Player of the Year award, teamed with Jack Gravina
Jr. of Aronimink Golf Club and Paul Cornley teamed with Overbrook Golf Club’s
Greg Jarmas, the PIAA runnerup as a senior at Lower Merion in 2009, to finish
in a tie for second with 2-under 70s at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club Tuesday.
The Sandy Run Country Club pair of Tom Conboy Jr. and Paul
Acierno took top honors with a 3-under 69 at the 6,526-yard, par-72 Whitemarsh
Valley layout that once hosted a regular PGA Tour stop.
The Llanerch Country Club pair of James Berenato and Jack
St. Amour finished in a tie for sixth at 77. Andrew Harmer of The Springhaven
Club teamed with Colin Goan of Merchantville Country Club to finish 11th
with an 80. Jack McClatchy of Jeffersonville Golf Club teamed with Llanerch’s
Jeff St. Armour to finish 14th with an 82. And Rolling Green Golf
Club’s father-son duo of Ron and Nolan Dirienzi had an 87.
