Rolling Green Golf Club’s Jake Calamaro, younger brother of
Radnor’s 2009 PIAA girls champion Jackie, reached the semifinals of the Golf
Association of Philadelphia’s Junior-Junior Boys’ Championship before falling
to eventual winner Colman Mitchell at Merchantville Country Club.
Calamaro carded a 4-over 40 over the 2,703-yard, par-36 nine
at Merchantville to finish fourth in qualifying Monday. He claimed a 4 and 3
victory over Llanerch Country Club’s Michael Castaldi in his first-round match
and the reached the semis with a hard-fought, 2-up triumph over Huntingdon
Valley Country Club’s Conor McGrath.
Calamaro gave Mitchell a battle before falling, 1-up, on the
final hole in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Mitchell defeated Trenton Country Club’s Philip Bancroft III, 2 and 1, in
Wednesday’s 18-hole final.
Aronimink Golf Club’s Civitella brothers, Billy and Kevin,
also earned spots in match play with rounds of 42 and 43, respectively, in
qualifying. Billy knocked off Doug Ergood Jr. of Tavistock Country Club, 2 and
1, in the opening round before being ousted by Bancroft, 2 and 1, in the second
round. Kevin ran into Mitchell in the first round and fell, 4 and 2.
Matthew Civitella of Waynesborough Country Club, who may or
may not be related to the Aronimink Civitellas (looks like there’s a little
investigative journalism to do in that regard), reached the semifinals before
falling to Bancroft, 3 and 2.
Llanerch’s Castaldi earned his spot in match play with a 46
in qualifying.
Merion Golf Club’s Mac Costin nabbed the last spot in match
play with a 48 and fell to medalist Michael Limongelli of Phoenixville Country
Club, 3 and 2, in the first round.
Overbrook Golf Club’s Jack Boyle had a 54 in qualifying to
get a shot in the first flight, but was knocked out in the first round by Andrew
Lauerman of Talamore Country Club, in a thriller that went 10 holes.
Lucas, Irey second in Senior Four-Ball
Concord Country Club’s Steve Lucas earned some golfing
notoriety when he carried the bag for his son-in-law Sean O’Hair’s first PGA
Tour win at the John Deere Classic and subsequent first major appearance in the
2005 British Open at St. Andrews, the home of golf in Scotland.
But Lucas can play a little, too. He teamed with an old pal,
Roc Irey of Lookaway Golf Club, to finish second in GAP’s Senior Four-Ball
Stroke Play Tuesday at Indian Valley
Country Club.
Lucas and Irey fired a 3-under 68 over the 6,533-yard,
par-72 Indian Valley layout to finish a shot behind the winning team of Joe
Russo and Mark Walker of Laure Creek Country Club.
Rolling Green Golf Club’s Robert Billings teamed with Peter
P. Dilullo of Applebrook Golf Club for a 74 that was good for 13th
place.
Merion Golf Club’s Carl Everett teamed with Michael Rose of
Talamore Country Club in the Senior-Senior division and lost out in a
tiebreaker after matching the 71 put up by the Huntingdon Valley Country Club
pair of Charles Whipple and Robert Peterman.
The Rolling Green duo of Edward Pappas and Lawrence Capuzzi
Jr. and the McCall Golf & Country Club pair of William McCabe Jr. and Rick
Bunn were two of the groups that finished in a tie for seventh at 74. The Springhaven Club’s Curt Fromal teamed
with Norman Jester of Downingtown Country Club to finish 10th with a
76.
Aronimink Golf Club’s John Harding teamed with Waynsborough
Country Club’s Charles Devine for a 79, but their net total of 63 gave them a
share of first place in the Super-Senior net scoring.
Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour
The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour made a stop Monday
at Wilmington Country Club and Boothwyn’s Caprian Kan fired an 85 to top the
field in the 13-to-15 division. Her round over the 5,476-yard, par-71
Wilmington layout featured eight pars and a birdie.
Also in the division, incoming Radnor freshman Gabrielle Kim
finished third with an 87 and Garnet Valley resident Alyssa Fulginiti was
fourth with a 96.
Episcopal Academy junior Trey Croney had a strong showing in
the 16-to-18 division as he carded a 75 to finish in a tie for fourth.
Christopher Chizauskie of Thornton fired a 1-over 72 to take first in the
division.
Also in the division, Haverford School junior Otis Baker
finished in a tie for 21st with an 80, a shot ahead of Garnet Valley
senior Jack Highfill and Jeff Painter of Swarthmore, both of whom were in the
group tied for 25th. Haverford School junior Jay Losty and Garnet
Valley senior Jake Hudock were among the players tied for 33rd with
83s and Ian Rothweiler of Radnor finished in a tie for 41st with an
86.
In the girls’ 16-to-18 division, Notre Dame senior Caroline
Barker finished fourth with a 95, Kimmy Sanna of Swarthmore finished sixth with
a 108, Julia Devine of Media finished in a tie for seventh with a 109, Emily
Fulginiti of Garnet Valley finished ninth with a 114, and Caitlin Bullock of
Wayne finished 10th with a 119.
In the 13-to-15 division, Jacob Liberman of Radnor finished
in a tie for 10th with an 80. Evan Brown of Chadds Ford and John
Updike of Wayne were two of the players who finished tied for 12th
at 81.
Other Delco finishers included Jack Bellwoar (87, tied for
19th) of Newtown Square, Ryan Brennan (87, tied for 19th)
of Media, Ryan Conway (87, tied for 19th) of Bryn Mawr, Daniel
Bullock (86, 31st) of Wayne, Benjamin Newlon (99, tied for 33rd)
of Wallingford, Edmund Garno (100, tied for 35th) of Haverford and
Matthew Hoppe (105, 39th) of Garnet Valley.
Among the nine-holers, Dolan Cox of Newtown Square finished
in a tie for third with a 45, Charlie Baker of Wayne finished in a tie for
fifth with a 46, Jackson Fields of Glen Mills finished 12th with a
55 and June Kim of Wayne finished 15th with a 62.
The Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour staged a three-day series
in and around Penn State with Springfield senior Samantha Miller, competing in
the 16-to-18 division, posting a 99 at the Toftrees Golf Resort and Conference
Center Monday, a 99 at Mountain View Country Club in Boalsburg Tuesday and a 92
at Penn State’s Blue Course for a three-day total of 290.
Garnet Valley junior Michael Stanilka teed it up in two of
the three legs of the series, carding a 90 Wednesday at the Penn State Blue Course,
and a 95 Tuesday at Mountain View.
Ingraham, Little share second place
Reigning Philadelphia Section PGA Player of the Year Stu
Ingraham of the M Golf Range in Newtown Square and Rolling Green Golf Club
assistant pro Mike Little finished in a tie for second in the Lehigh Valley
Open at Northampton Country Club with 6-under 138 totals.
Little held the first-round lead after opening with a
5-under 67, but fell back with a 1-under 71 to finish two shots back of the
winner, Don Allan of Burlington Country Club. Allan followed up an
opening-round 69 with a 67 for an eight-under 136 total.
Ingraham had a pair of 69s to get his share of second with
Little.
Concord Country Club head pro Mike Moses finished in a tie
for fourth with rounds of 69 and 71 for a 4-under 140 total.
Billy Stewart of Golf Galaxy, low pro at last month’s
Philadelphia Open at Waynesborough Country Club, finished in a tie for seventh
at 3-under 141 with rounds of 70 and 71. Radnor Valley Country Club head pro
George Forster finished in a tie for 19th at 2-over 146 with rounds
of 74 and 72.
Moses, Fedoryshyn get it going
Concord Country Club head pro Mike Moses made sure he had
the best senior player in the club on his team when Concord hosted the
Philadelphia Section PGA Pro-Senior Scratch event Friday.
That would be Doug Fedoryshyn, the guy who fired a 63 that
featured a three-hole stretch of eagle, eagle (a hole-In-one in that case),
birdie on his way to the Concord Senior championship in 2011.
The Whitford Country Club team of Mike Ladden and Mark Ellinger gave everybody in the field
something to shoot at when they posted a better-ball total of 8-under 63.
And Moses and Fedoryshyn, playing in the last group of the
day, finally matched their score and got a piece of the title. Fedoryshyn got
it going on the back nine, making four
of the six birdies he had on his own ball in the round on the final seven
holes.
Busy week ahead
The American Junior Golf Association returns to Huntingdon
Valley Country Club Monday for the third annual AJGA Philadelphia Junior.
A top-flight field of junior golfers will tee it up in the
54-hole event. Malvern Prep senior Michael Davis, a Newtown Square resident and
Aronimink Golf Club member, is in the boys field. And Radnor sophomore Brynn
Walker, who won the Pennsylvania Junior Girls title earlier this summer, is in
the girls field.
And last, and certainly not least, Aurora Kan, a three-time Daily Times Player of the Year and the
2010 PIAA champion at Chichester, will tee it up in the first round of
qualifying Monday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, being held at The Country Club
of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. Kan tees off at 9 a.m. off the 10th
tee.
Kan is coming off a sophomore campaign at Purdue during
which she finished in a tie for 15th in the individual chase at the
NCAA Tournament and helped the Boilermakers take third in the team race.
Two rounds of qualifying in Charleston are scheduled to
conclude Tuesday with the top 64 finishers advancing to match play beginning
Wednesday. That will be the goal for Kan as she goes up against a field of the
top amateur golfers in the world. If the 2010 Pennsylvania Women’s Amateur
champion can get into match play, well, anything can happen in match play.
