Drue Nicholas of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. was a junior phenom and a scholastic standout at St. Augustine Prep before heading off for a big-time college career in the Atlantic Coast Conference at North Carolina State.
But after a year in Raleigh, Nicholas changed course. Deciding to focus on a future in finance, Nicholas came home and joined head coach Ben Feld’s program at Drexel. Through it all, one thing hasn’t changed: Nicholas is a player, a stick in golf parlance.
Closing with a sparkling 5-under-par 66 Saturday at the Sea Palms Resort on Sea Island, Ga., Nicholas cruised to a three-shot victory in the individual chase in The Peoples Golf Championship. It was his fourth individual crown as a Dragon as Nicholas closes out a college career that is evoking memories of Drexel great Chris Crawford.
Nicholas finished in a tie for fourth place at Sea Palms a year ago and his familiarity with the 6,664-yard, par-71 layout was apparent right from the start. He opened with a 5-under 66 and added a 2-under 69 in Friday’s second round that left him two shots behind the North Carolina Greensboro pair of Jake Lewis, a freshman from Cary, N.C., and Kelvin Hernandez, a sophomore from Puerto Rico, going into Saturday’s final round.
Lewis had opened with a sizzling 8-under 63 and added a 1-under 70 in Friday’s second round. Hernandez had opened with a sparkling 6-under 65 and added a 3-under 68 in Friday’s second round.
Another 66 in the final round gave Nicholas a 12-under 201 total while Lewis matched par in the final round with a 71 to finish in a tie for second place with Davidson’s Joshua Stewart, a redshirt junior from Winter Springs, Fla., each ending up with a 9-under 204 total.
Hernandez struggled in the final round with an 8-over 79 and finished alone in 13th place with a 1-under 212 total.
UNCG, however, easily captured the team title with a 21-under 831 total that was 16 shots clear of runnerup Davidson.
It was the fourth tournament win of the wraparound 2024-2025 season for the Spartans and their second straight, coming on the heels of last month’s victory in the Dorado Beach Collegiate at TPC Dorado Beach’s Sugarcane Course in Puerto Rico.
It was a strong showing for the two Big 5 programs that traveled to Sea Island as Drexel, behind Nicholas, finished in third place, five shots behind Davidson, and Villanova ended up three shots behind the Dragons in fourth.
The Spartans, a Southern Conference representative, led from start to finish. They opened with a sparkling 16-under 268 and added a 5-under 279 in Friday’s second round before matching par in the final round with a 284.
In addition to the tie for second place individually by Lewis, UNCG also got solid showing from Jack Marcotte, a graduate student from Apex, N.C. who finished alone in fourth place, three shots behind his teammate Lewis and Davidson’s Stewart at 6-under 207.
Marcotte got it in in red figures each day as he opened with a 2-under 69 and added a 1-under 70 in Friday’s second round before closing with a 3-under 68.
UNCG was the highest-ranked team in the field at No. 104 in the Scoreboard, powered by clippd, rankings. The Spartans earned a regional bid a year ago, but were unable to advance to the NCAA Championship at the La Costa Resort & Spa as a seven seed in the Austin Regional.
Davidson, an Atlantic 10 representative, took second place as the Wildcats opened with a solid 7-under 277, struggled a little in Friday’s second round with a 9-over 293 and closed with another 277 to end up 16 shots behind UNCG with a 5-under 847 total.
Davidson saw its two-year hold on the team title in The Peoples Championship snapped by UNCG.
Stewart led the way for Davidson as he closed with a sparkling 6-under 65 to get a share of second place with UNCG’s Lewis at 9-under. Stewart had opened with a 3-under 68 before adding a 1-under 70 in Friday’s second round.
Drexel, in its final year in the Coastal Athletic Association, was steady throughout as the Dragons matched par in the opening round with a 284 and added a 2-under 282 in Friday’s second round before closing with a 2-over 286 that left them in third place with an even-par 852 total.
