Team Chon accounts for a pair of Junior Tour victories at Valleybrook

Not sure if Ella Chon and Ava Chon of Princeton Junction, N.J. are sisters, but I do know they were the best players among the girls in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Wednesday at Valleybrook Country Club in Blackwood, N.J.

Ella Chon matched par with a sparkling 72 to capture top honors in the younger 13-to-15 division. Ella Chon made birdies at the second, eighth, 12th and 15th holes and had 11 pars on her scorecard. She posted a 1-under 35 on the incoming nine at Valleybrook.

Brynne Mushlin of Berwyn was the only other competitor in the 13-to-15 field and had a birdie at the ninth hole and nine pars as she registered a 91.

Ava Chon couldn’t quite catch Ella Chon for low-Chon honors, but she had a pretty nice round of her own as she birdied the first hole and had 10 pars on her scorecard, including seven straight on the last seven holes of Valleybrook’s back nine. It added up to a 7-over 79 that gave Ava Chon a victory in the 16-to-18 division.

Grace Klements of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. had seven pars on her way to an 85 that earned her runnerup honors among the older girls.

Emma Schotsch, who wrapped up a solid career at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy by finishing in a tie for fourth place in the Inter-Ac League Championship last month at French Creek Golf Club, took third place with an 86 that featured a birdie at the third hole and six pars.

Skye Mada of Cherry Hill, N.J. rounded out the 16-to-18 field as she finished in fourth place with a 94.

The best score among the guys was turned in by Carson Thompson of Mount Laurel, N.J. as he birdied the ninth hole and added 12 pars on his way to a 4-over 76 that enabled him to earn medalist honors in the 16-to-18 division. Thompson rattled off six straight pars on Valleybrook’s incoming nine from the 10th through the 15th holes.

Luke Turse of Hainesport, N.J. had birdies on the fourth and seventh holes as he finished a shot behind Thompson in second place with a 77.

Brendan Meagher of Swedesboro, N.J., Sean Walker of Haddonfield, N.J., Owen Blazick of Mountain Top and Jack Orr of Medford, N.J. finished in a tie for third place as they all landed on 6-over 78.

Meagher, who had shared the top spot in the Rehoboth Beach Junior Open earlier this week in Delaware, had birdies on the second, sixth and eighth holes and registered nine pars. Walker birdied the ninth hole and had 11 pars. Blazick birdied the sixth, 10th and 16th holes and had nine pars. Orr’s steady round featured 12 pars.

Joseph Fargnoli of Mickleton, N.J. took seventh place with an 81, Cole Apeldorn of Southampton was eighth with an 85, Trey Campbell of Haverford was ninth with an 88 and Nathan Sauder of Pittsgrove, N.J. rounded out the 16-to-18 field as he finished alone in 10th place with a 92.

A couple of Jamison entries, David Fiorita and A.J. Molnar, shared first place in the 13-to-15 division, each ending up with an 84. Fiorita had nine pars on his scorecard while Molnar birdied the fourth hole and had seven pars.

Sebastian Furfaro of Mickelton, N.J. made birdies at the sixth and 15th holes and had five pars as he finished two shots behind the top two in third place with an 86.

Dean Kaiser of Bryn Mawr took fourth place with an 89, Zach Moua of Berwyn was fifth with a 90, Lucas Zhang of Yardley was sixth with a 102 and Wills Kaiser, another member of Bryn Mawr’s Team Kaiser, was seventh with a 104.

Malachi Davis of Williamstown, N.J. finished in eighth place with a 107 and Sean Murphy of Haddonfield, N.J. rounded out the 13-to-15 field as he ended up alone in ninth place with a 113.

Lawson Leeper of York took a road trip to South Jersey and bested the field of nine-holers with a 3-over 39 that featured a birdie at the fourth hole and four pars. Alex DiGiacinto of Nazareth had four pars as he earned runnerup honors with a 5-over 41.

Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. and Benjamin Mayer of Garnet Valley shared third place as each landed on 42. Whitney had five pars while Mayer had four pars.

Thomas Carpenter of Bristol took fifth place with a 43, Judd Fletcher of Moorestown, N.J. was sixth with a 44, Holden Sparks of Nazareth was seventh with a 45 and Lauren Patullo, another Moorestown, N.J. entry, was eighth with a 47.

Rounding out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division were Gus Stoltzfus of Lincoln University and Brayden Mitchell of Merchantville, N.J. as they shared ninth place, each signing for a 49.
