Gute, Hughes, Murphy share top spot in Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA qualifier at Scotland Run

In the second in a series of qualifiers for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship, Downingtown East senior Dylan Gute, Scott Hughes of Ambler and Joshua Murphy of Newtown Square each carded a 3-over-par 74 at Scotland Run Golf Club in some serious summer heat in Williamstown, N.J. Monday to share the top spot in the 16-to-18 division.

The top finishers in the overall 13-to-18 scoring advanced to next Monday’s Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship at Valley Country Club. Not exactly sure how many qualifiers emerged from Monday’s round at Scotland Run, but I can break out the top 10 in the overall 13-to-18 scoring while rounding up the usual 16-to-18 and 13-to-15 divisions.

The top finishers next week at Valley will advance to the Boys Junior PGA Championship, a major national junior event staged by the PGA of America which tees off July 12 at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky. Last year’s Boys Junior PGA Championship was a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gute birdied the seventh hole and made 13 pars, seven of them on the incoming nine at the par-71 Scotland Run layout. Hughes birdied the ninth hole to wrap up an even-par 35 on the outgoing nine and finished with 13 pars on his scorecard. Murphy made birdies at the second, 10th, 14th and 15th holes, the back-nine birdie barrage giving him a 2-under 34.

Seth Roth of Hatboro and Graham White of West Chester each posted a 7-over 78 to share fourth place among the older guys and finish in a tie for seventh in the overall scoring.

Marple Newtown junior Jake Micewski and Evan Goldberg of Linwood, N.J. finished in a tie for sixth place in the 16-to-18 division and rounded out the top 10 in the overall scoring by sharing ninth as each signed for a 79.

Mathew Adler of Medford, N.J. and Trevor Talerico of West Chester finished in a tie for eighth place among the older guys, each landing on 82. Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division were Ethan Kulhkin of New York, N.Y. and Rocco Sanfelice of Woolwich, N.J., both of whom registered an 83 to share ninth place.

Jack Dare of Moorestown, N.J. birdied the 375-yard, par-4 16th hole and had 12 pars on his scorecard, including seven on the outgoing nine, as he carded a 4-over 75 to finish atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division and was fourth in the overall scoring, a shot behind the trio that shared the top spot in the 16-to-18 division.

Zachary Freed of Linwood, N.J. and Aidan Farkas of Ardmore shared runnerup honors in the 13-to-15 division and ended up in a tie for fifth place in the overall scoring as each posted a 77. Freed made birdies at the 15th and 18th holes and had seven pars on the front nine. Farkas had birdies at the ninth and 14th holes.

Kevin Zheng of Warren, N.J. finished three shots behind Freed and Farkas in fourth place among the younger guys with an 80. Daniel Flaherty, a sophomore at Springfield (Delco) was a shot behind Zheng in fifth place with an 81.

Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J. took sixth place with an 83, Hank Kancher of Philadelphia was seventh with an 84, and Daniel Herzchel of Linwood, N.J. was eighth with an 85.

Sean Curran of Newtown Square finished in ninth place with an 89 and Tommy Marshall of Marlton, N.J. rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division by ending up in 10th with a 91.

The best score among the girls at Scotland Run emerged from the 13-to-15 division as Meredith Finger of Wilmington, Del. captured first place among the younger girls with an 86. Finger started off the 10th tee and parred four of the last five holes on the incoming nine and then finished her round with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes.

Emma Li of Newtown was the runnerup as she had five pars on her way to a 97. Rounding out the 13-to-15 field was Juliana Duggan of Egg Harbor City, N.J. as she carded a 101 to finish alone in third place.

Skye Mada of Cherry Hill, N.J. and Curstan Bunch of Wilmington, Del. each had six pars on her scorecard as they shared first place in the 16-to-18 division with identical 90s.

Elle Miller of Lumberton, N.J. rounded out the field in the 16-to-18 division as she finished alone in third place with a 106.

The Philadelphia Girls Junior PGA Championship tees off July 12 at Commonwealth National Golf Club and is an open tournament, so there is no need for qualifiers for the girls. The PGA of America’s Girls Junior PGA Championship opens July 27th at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Jackson Lane of Cinnaminson, N.J. had five pars on his scorecard[TM1]  as he bested the field of nine-holers with a 7-over 43.

Jack Luterman of Ardmore and Benjamin Mayer of Garnet Valley shared runnerup honors as each posted a 44 that left them a shot behind Lane. Luterman had birdies at the 10th and 15th holes while Mayer had two pars.

Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. was another shot behind Luterman and Mayer in fourth place with a 45. Anthony Primo of Marlton, N.J. finished in fifth place with a 46 and Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. was sixth with a 47.

David Padgett of Barneget, N.J. took seventh place with a 50 and Jacob Shachur of Sewell, N.J. was eighth with a 53.

Gavin Lane of Team Lane of Cinnaminson, N.J. and Lucas Solano of Vineland, N.J. rounded out the top 10 as they finished in a tie for ninth place, each posting a 57. Anthony Beach of Westville, N.J. rounded out the field in the coed 12-and-under field as he finished in 11th place with a 62.
