Thomas, McGarry each fire 70 at LedgeRock to earn Junior Tour wins

Win Thomas of Unionville fired a 2-under-par 70 to capture top honors in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Thursday at the challenging LedgeRock Golf Club in Mohnton, Berks County.
Just an eighth-grader, Thomas had four birdies over the 6,243-yard, par-72 LedgeRock layout to cruise to a five-shot victory in the division.
Garnet Valley junior Jacob Sokalsky and Strath Haven sophomore Jackson Debusschere shared second place, each carding a 3-over 75. Haverford School sophomore Chase Cohen finished alone in fourth with a 76.
Jake Shmonov of Harrisburg finished fifth with a 77, Luke Watson of Royersford was sixth with a 78 and Henry Stone of Kennett Square and Chris Dorey of Allentown shared seventh place, each posting a 79.
Rounding out the top 10 were two players, Zachary Loninger of Crosswick, N.J. and Malvern Prep sophomore Jack Fialko, who finished tied for ninth at 80.
Finian McGarry of Haddonfield, N.J. matched Thomas’ 2-under 70 to capture the 16-to-18 division. McGarry had seven pars and two birdies in an efficient 2-under 34 on the front nine. Ryan Woelfling of  Myerstown was the runnerup with a 78.
Brett Ostroski of Shavertown finished third with a 79, Nicholas Hano of Warrington was fourth with an 80 and Luke Pastore of Holmes and Michael  Festa of Ambler shared fifth place, each posting an 83.
Dylan Gooneratne, a District One Class AAA qualifier as a freshman at Plymouth-Whitemarsh last fall, finished alone in seventh with an 84. Rounding out the top 10 were three players, Patrick Farrell of Ridley Park, Jordan Pick of Sugarloaf and Damon Spatacco of West Chester, who finished tied for eighth at 88.
Alyson Rentschler of Hamburg was the only entry in the girls 16-to-18 division and got credit for her first win of the wraparound 2017-’18 season with a 94.
Kayla Maletto of Sinking Spring rattled off six straight pars on the back nine on her way to an 89 that gave her the top spot in the 13-to-15 division. Kayla Loninger of Crosswick, N.J.’s Team Loninger was the runnerup with a 94 that included a birdie at the seventh hole.
Abigail Lynn of Furlong finished third with a 97 and Anisha Sonti of Chester Springs was fourth with a 106.
Nicholas Gross of Downingtown made birdies at the fifth, seventh and eighth holes on his way to a 1-under 35 that gave him a victory among the nine-holers, his 16th Junior Tour win. Michael Maslanka of Taylor was the runnerup with a 41.
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting’s Team Gooneratne won a scorecard playoff with Tyler Debusschere of Wallingford’s Team Debusschere for third after each carded a 45. Debusschere’s round was highlighted by an eagle at the 200-yard, par-4 third hole.
Another member of Downingtown’s Team Gross, Evan Gross, finished alone in fifth place with a 47 and Mason Tucker of York was sixth with a 48.
Two more members of Crosswick, N.J.’s Team Loninger accounted for the next two spots as Amelia Loninger took seventh with a 52 and Samantha Loninger was eighth with a 55. Reed Krasse of York finished ninth with a 56.
The LedgeRock stop also included men’s and women’s divisions.
Jake Hudock of Glen Mills claimed the win in the men’s 17-to-24 division with a 78 that featured an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. Ryan Barley of Mt. Laurel, N.J. was the runnerup with an 89.
Topping the women’s 17-to-24 division was Alvernia senior Emily Gilbert, who carded a 78. Gilbert of Gilbertsville captured the individual title in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship at Hershey Country Club’s East Course for the second straight year this spring and led the way as Alvernia earned a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship at the Mission Inn Resort’s El Campion Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., the first berth in nationals in program history.
Somebody’s going to have some work to do to supplant Gilbert as the best player in the history of Alvernia women’s golf.
Elaina McGarrigle of Wernersville was the runnerup to Gilbert at LedgeRock with a 108.
