Maguires ride fast start to victory in GAP Father & Son (Older)

With a balky sciatic nerve issue quieted, there was no stopping Alexander Magure Sr. and son Bo as the Brookside Country Club pair captured the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Father & Son (Older) crown with an even-par 72 at Schuylkill Country Club in Orwigsburg Thursday.
It was the second Father & Son title for the 74-year-old Alexander Maguire Sr., who teamed with son Alexander Jr. to win the Father & Son (18-and-older) title in 2008. The Father & Son (Older), a select drive/alternate shot format, teams dad with a son 30 or older.
The Maguires carded an even-par 72 over the 6,436-yard, par-72 Schuylkill Country Club layout, a Donald Ross design, to finish two shots clear of the field.
They started on the back nine and did most of their damage on the incoming nine with four birdies. Alexander drilled a 7-iron to 12 feet and 30-year-old Bo dropped the birdie putt at 11. Bo drained a 25-foot birdie putt on the 15th. Alexander’s 9-iron tee shot on the par-3 16th settled four feet from the hole and Bo converted. And the Maguires made it three birdies in a row on 17 as Bo wedged the approach to eight feet and dad closed the deal.
The putters went cold on the front nine as the Maguires suffered a three-putt bogey at the first and a four-putt double bogey at the second, but Bo’s length got them to a greenside bunker in two at the par-5 third and Bo blasted out close for a tap-in birdie. Bogeys at seven, another three-putt, and eight dropped them back to even-par, but that was more than good enough to claim the title.
The runnerup was the team of Matthew McKeone of Moselem Springs Golf Club and Guy McKeone of Reading Country Club, who carded a 2-over 74. The Manufacturers Golf & Country Club duo of Maximillian Muller and James Muller finished alone in third place at 75.
Robert Billings of Rolling Green Golf Club and Rob Billings of the Philadelphia Publinks Golf Association, Kevin Frost of Philadelphia Cricket Club and Steve Frost of Limekiln Golf Club and Cory Reighard of Llanerch Country Club and Jesse Reighard of Down River Golf Course finished in a three-way tie for fourth, all at 6-over 78.
Three other teams – Gus Steiger and Gus Steger Sr. of Great Bear Golf Club, Trevor Seufer and Joseph Seufer of Stonewall and Gary Yeager of Philadelphia Cricket Club and Royce Yeager of Cedarbrook Country Club – finished in a tie for seventh at 79.
Bradley Roberts of Little Mill Country Club and Douglas Roberts of Chester Valley Golf Club and Vince Lopez and Joe Lopez of host Schuylkill Country Club ended up in a tie for 10th at 80.
A Donald Ross design proved to be no problem for a St. Davids Golf Club pair as Jay Howson Jr.  and Gregory Howson captured the Super-Senior division with an even-par 72 over a little shorter Schuylkill Country Club layout measuring 6,086 yards.
Team Howson added another Father & Son title to the back-to-back victories they recorded in 2008 and 2009.
The Howsons made short birdie putts of five feet at No. 2 and three feet at No. 8 to make the turn at 2-under. The highlight on the back nine was a birdie at the par-4 13th as the 78-year-old Jay Howson Jr. sent a 4-hybrid in close and 46-year-old Gregory converted the putt.
The Chester Valley Golf Club duo of Mike Civitello Jr. and Michael Civitello took runnerup honors at 2-over 74. Neil Gordon of Five Ponds Golf Club and Herbert Gordon of Doylestown Country Club finished alone in third place with a 75.
Jeffrey Huntzinger of Philmont Country Club and Robert Huntzinger of RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve, Russell Naylor of Stonewall and Chris Naylor of The Springhaven Club and Michael Brown Jr. of the Philadelphia Publinks and Michael Brown Sr. finished in a tie for third at 78.
Phil Over of Honeybrook Golf Club and Phil Over of Penn Oaks Golf Club and Troy Watson of Spring-Ford Country Club and Paul Watson of the J. Wood Platt Alumni Club shared seventh place, each team carding a 79.
