Overbrook Golf Club senior standout Ray Thompson and partner
Glenn Smeraglio of Mercer Oaks Golf Club were a formidable team at Thursday’s
Golf Association of Philadelphia Senior Four-Ball Stroke Play championship at
North Hills Country Club, but they came up a shot out of a three-way tie for
first.
The Lehigh Country Club pair of Thomas Soares and Bob Beck
captured the gross title in a match of cards with two other teams to capture
the title after the three teams each posted a 4-under 67 over the 6,248-yard,
par-71 North Hills layout. The back-nine score for Soares and Beck was the
tiebreaker.
The two teams that also had 67 were also involved in a
match-of-cards situation at last year’s Senior Four-Ball Stroke Play. They were
the Bellewood Country Club pair of Marty Dorminy and James Prendergast and the
Chester Valley duo of Kenneth Silverwood and Ed Chylinski.
Thomson and Smeraglio carded a 3-under 68 to finish in a tie
for fourth with the Makefield Heights Golf Club pair of Scott McIntosh and
Richard Young.
Among the four teams tied for sixth at 2-under 69 were the
Merion Golf Club tandem of Arthur Kania Jr. and Kirk Luntey and the Edgmont
Country Club pair of Dan Lamb and Tim Ungrady.
Among the five teams tied for 10th at 1-under 70
was the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club pair of Richard Atcavage and former NBA
referee Steve Javie. Edgmont’s Michael Quinn teamed with Bob Majczan of Lookaway
Golf Club for an even-par 71 and Robert Billings of Rolling Green Golf Club and
Pete Dilullo of Applebrook Golf Club posted a 1-over 72.
White Manor Country Club’s Don Donatoni, GAP’s dominant
super-senior, teamed up with Merion’s Carl Everett to capture top honors in the
super-senior division with a 5-under 66.
The Springhaven Club’s Curt Fromal teamed with Downingtown
Country Club’s Norman Jester to finish in a tie for ninth at 1-over 72.
