Herbst, Frazier make it a Mechanisburg sweep at Harry Hammond Invitational



   The area’s top junior golfers gathered Monday at Concord Country Club for a special stop on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour calendar as they vied for college scholarships at the 14th annual Harry Hammond Invitational.
   The event is named for Harry Hammond Jr., a PGA Master Professional and the Director of Golf at Penn Oaks Golf Club. In his free time, Hammond is the golf coach at West Chester University.
   Scholarships are awarded to the top three boys and girls finishers. This year $3,000 in scholarships were awarded. Juniors will receive their money when they enter their first year of post-high school education.
   David Herbst of Mechanicsburg took top honors among the boys with a 1-over 72 over the 6,269-yard, par-71 Concord layout.
   The other two scholarship winners were recent Spring-Ford High graduate John Foley and Cooper Kronenberger of West Chester, both of whom carded 2-over 73s. Foley parred the first hole of a playoff to claim second place.
   Radnor senior Michael Sydnes and recent Harriton graduate Erik Reisner, a two-time Central League champion, were in a group of five players who shared fourth place at 3-over 74.
   Among some of the other finishers were: Luke Shevlin (76, tied for 13th) of Thornton; Marple Newtown senior Joey DelFranco (78, tied for 19th); and Ryan Conway (86, 32nd) of Bryn Mawr.
    On the girls side, Morgan Frazier made it a sweep for the Mechanicsburg contingent as she fired a 3-over 74 to easily capture the top prize.
   The other scholarship winners were Allentown’s Kelsey Patterson, who was the runnerup with an 84, and Newtown’s Lauren  Muhlbauer, who finished third with an 84.
   Some members of Notre Dame’s Inter-Ac League powerhouse also teed it up at Concord with junior Bridget Pyott finishing a tie for seventh with a 90, senior Maddie Keane placing ninth with a 94 and senior Gabriella Morganti finishing 10th with a 98.

Friday’s roundup will include a change in dates for next summer’s U.S. Women’s Amateur at Rolling Green Golf Club, a wrapup of Daily Times Player of the Year Brynn Walker’s week at the PGA Junior Championship in Bryan, Texas and results from Round 1 of the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Patterson Cup at Chester Valley Golf Club. Saturday’s regular Golf Notebook will feature a more extensive report from Round 2 of the Patterson Cup, the last major on the GAP calendar, and a victory in the Philadelphia Section PGA’s Assistant Pro Championship for Billy Stewart, the former Malvern Prep and Saint Joseph’s standout who is an assistant at The ACE Club.
