It’s always interesting to watch the progress of youngsters who play the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour.
Over the years this blog has chronicled kids who could barely break 50 for nine holes as 12-year-olds or younger blossom into high school champions who get scholarship money to play college golf.
Many of the Philly Junior Tour players might not reach those kinds of heights, but they establish friendships for life, not only with their competitors, but with the game itself.
If you’re a kid who has become interested in playing the game of golf, but your parents don’t belong to a country club and you don’t think there is a path for you to learn to play and compete, well maybe there is a way.
For the sixth straight year, PGA REACH Philadelphia, the charitable arm of the Philadelphia Section PGA, is offering the chance to apply for the 2024 Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship. Now is the time to act as the deadline to apply is March 8.
In 2023, 16 youngsters were awarded Junior Tour Diversity Scholarships. They were recognized at the Philadelphia Junior Tour’s year-end banquet Dec. 4th at Fairways and Dreams Indoor Golf in Conshohocken.
Since 2019, PGA REACH Philadelphia has offered youngsters 18 and under with a passion for golf from diverse backgrounds a chance to participate on the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour. With opportunities to play, grow and compete, many Junior Tour members graduate to play at the college level and beyond.
The Philly Junior Tour is proud to be able to help develop social skills and self-esteem and inspire youngsters in the community by providing scholarships to individuals from diverse backgrounds. The Philly Junior Tour wants to see you get out there and hit the ball around and see what happens.
Any girl is eligible to apply regardless of her financial background or situation.
Individuals and those from communities that experience discrimination and exclusion, whether for social, political or economic reasons, and from any status or background may apply.
Individuals of any race or ethnicity in need of financial assistance who meet the need-based requirements listed in the application may also apply.
In addition to receiving Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour membership dues, each Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship recipient is assigned to a PGA professional who acts as a mentor and coach.
The scholarship covers dues up to seven tournaments each year until an applicant turns 18 and is no longer eligible.
FUNdamental Tour membership and caddy fees are available to applicants who have yet to reach the age of 12.
The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia participants who receive a Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship will receive two tournaments and a Philly Junior Tour membership.
Cobra Puma Golf provided each of the 2023 Diversity Scholarship recipients with complimentary golf clubs.
In addition to Cobra Puma Golf, the Philadelphia Junior Tour Diversity Scholarship initiative is supported by the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board, the 1854 Foundation and The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia.
