Haverford School senior Jake Maddaloni was one of the best
players in the Inter-Ac League last fall and you can argue that the Inter-Ac is
the best high school league for golf in Pennsylvania.
Maddaloni finished third in the Inter-Ac’s regular-season
individual points standings while leading the Fords to their third straight
league title. Maddaloni finished in a tie for fifth in the Bert Linton Inter-Ac
individual championship at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
Maddaloni put his talent in display in firing a 1-over-par
72 at Southmoore Golf Course in Bath, Northampton County, to finish atop the
16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Wednesday. It
was also the last of six qualifiers for Monday’s Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA
Championship, which will be held at Bellewood Country Club in Pottstown.
Maddaloni and 13-to-15 division winner Connor Gherghel of
Orwigsburg, who matched Maddaloni’s 1-over 72, headed a group of 10 players who
earned a spot in the field at Bellewood.
The Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship is normally a
qualifier for the PGA of America’s Boys Junior PGA Championship, but that
event, originally scheduled to tee off July 13 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St.
Lucie, Fla. has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship will kick off
an important stretch of events for junior players in this area. The Golf
Association of Philadelphia will hold qualifying for match play for its Junior
Boys’ Championship Tuesday at the 1912 Club, formerly known as Plymouth Country
Club.
It appears the Pennsylvania Golf Association will stage its
Junior Boys’ and Junior Girls’ Championships at their traditional site, Hershey
Country Club’s East Course, beginning June 29.
Maddaloni had four birdies and an eagle in fashioning his 1-under
round over the par-71 Southmoore layout.
James Ulsh of Carlisle and James Flickinger of Waverly each
carded a 2-over 73 to share second place in the 16-to-18 division and were tied
for third in the qualifying chase. Ulsh birdied the second hole while
Flickinger had five birdies on his scorecard.
Tyler Kipp, who completed a solid scholastic career at
Muhlenberg last fall, finished alone in fourth place among the older guys with
a 5-over 76. Kipp had already booked a spot in the field at Bellewood in an
earlier qualifier.
Colton Yenser of Douglassville carded a 77 to finish in
fifth place in the 16-to-18 division and Jake Rotelle of Honey Brook was
another shot behind Yenser in sixth with a 78. Both punched their tickets to
the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship.
Owen Fahs of Nazareth, who had earned a trip to Bellewood in
a qualifier at Scotland Run Golf Club earlier this week, finished alone in
seventh place with an 80.
The last two berths to the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA
Championship out of the 16-to-18 division were filled by Zachary Sandler of
Gladwyne and Luke Kelly of Wayne.
Sandler carded an 81 to finish alone in eighth place in the
division and was ninth overall. Kelly shared ninth place in the division with
Simon Domencic of Lebanon and it appears Kelly defeated Domencic in a playoff
for the final ticket to Bellewood.
Gherghel had two birdies and an eagle on the driveable par-4
11th hole in his round of 72 that was eight shots clear of the rest
of the 13-to-15 field.
Three players – Jake Micewski of Broomall, Michael Vital of
Bethlehem and Ajeet Bagga of Blue Bell – finished in a tie for second place in
the division, each carding an 80. Micewski had already clinched a spot in the
Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA at Scotland Run. Vital and Bagga earned the final
two tickets to Bellewood out of the younger group.
Nick Mahoney of Lewisburg finished in fifth place in the
13-to-15 division with an 82, Strath Haven sophomore Tyler Debusschere, who
helped the Panthers earn the first Central League title in program history last
fall, was sixth with an 84 and Shane Powelson of Kennett Square was seventh
with an 87.
Noah Moeller of Doylestown took eighth place with an 89 and
Grady Hearn of Greentown and Joey McGinty rounded out the top 10 in the
13-to-15 division as each carded a 93 to finish in a tie for ninth place.
Among the girls, Mount St. Joseph senior Clare Gimpel, who
helped the Mount capture the PIAA Class AAA team crown last fall, took top
honors in the 16-to-18 division with a 6-over 77 that included a birdie on the
14th hole.
Emma Schotsch, who lost her junior season at Springside
Chestnut Hill Academy this spring to the coronavirus pandemic, birdied the 11th
hole on her way to an 85 that gave her runnerup honors among the older girls.
Grace Sanborn of Easton birdied the par-3 fifth hole and finished in third
place with a 92.
Gwendolyn Powell of Madison Township registered five pars in
a front-nine 40 on her way to an 87 that gave her the victory in the 13-to-15
division.
Serena Bagga, who was the lone girl in the field for the
Inter-Ac Bert Linton individual championship at Gulph Mills after a solid
freshman season for Germantown Academy last fall, was the runnerup to Powell
with a 91 that included a 44 on the incoming nine. Kiran Bagga, another member
of Blue Bell’s Team Bagga, finished in third place with a 97 that included a
back-nine 45.
Samuel Vinc of Brockton birdied the second hole on his way
to a 9-over 45 that bested the field of nine-holers. Daniel Rozinsky of Newtown
matched Vinc’s birdie at the second and finished just a shot behind Vinc in
second place with a 46.
Anthony Proud of Stroudsburg and Miles McGinty of Lititz
finished in a tie for third place, each posting a 48. Benjamin Boyanoski of
Scranton took fifth place with a 50 and J.P. Klock of Oreland rounded out the coed
12-and-under division field with a 56 that left him in seventh place.
