With freshman Ricky Castillo leading the way, things are
looking up for the Florida golf program.
The precocious Castillo of Yorba Linda, Calif. and a
deserving No. 5 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), poured it on Sunday
in the final round of the Florida Gators Invitational with a sparkling
6-under-par 64 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. to capture
the individual title by eight shots and lead host Florida to the team title in
a runaway.
Castillo had seven birdies against a lone bogey at the sixth
hole over the 6,701-yard, par-70 Mark Bostick layout Sunday on the heels of a
7-under 63 in the afternoon session of Saturday’s double-round. It added up to
a 13-under 197 total that left the rest of the field eating his dust.
Coming off a 2018-2019 season in which Florida failed to
make match play in the Southeastern Conference Championship and failed to
advance out of the NCAA Pullman Regional as an eighth seed, these Gators look a
little more like themselves.
Castillo’s heroics helped Florida, No. 31 in the latest Golfstat
rankings, record the best team round of the day, a 7-under 273, as the Gators finished
with a 12-under 828 total. Their SEC rival Vanderbilt, at No. 19 the
highest-ranked team in the field, closed with a solid 1-over 281 to finish 18
shots behind Florida at 6-over 846.
A postseason run in the 2018-’19 season carried the
Commodores all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship at The
Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
It was a great trip to South Florida for No. 73 Penn State,
which closed with a solid 1-over 281 to gain a share of third place with American
Athletic Conference power South Florida, ranked 36th, at 12-over
852, six shots behind the Commodores. The Bulls matched par in the final round
with a 280.
No. 29 Liberty had the second-best team round of the day, a
1-under 279, to finish alone in fifth place in the 15-team field at 15-over
855. The Flames advanced to the NCAA Championship at The Blessings with a
fifth-place finish in the Athens Regional last spring.
Backing up Castillo for Florida was John Axelson, a junior
from Denmark who contributed a sparkling 4-under 66 to the Gators’ strong final
round and ended up alone in third place in the individual standings at 4-under
206.
Blake Dyer, a redshirt senior from St. Petersburg, Fla.
closed with a solid 1-over 71 to join the group tied for 16th place
at 2-over 212. Chris Nido, a junior from Miami, Fla., finished among the group
tied for 31st place at 6-over 216 after closing with a 74.
Rounding out the Florida lineup was Manny Girona, a redshirt
sophomore from Windermere, Fla. who finished among the group tied for 60th
place at 223. Girona’s final round of 2-over 72, however, was a counter for the
Gators.
West Virginia’s Logan Perkins, a junior from Locust Grove,
Ga., earned runnerup honors to Castillo in the individual standings, although
his 5-under 205 total left him eight shots behind the winner. Perkins surged
into contention on the strength of a scintillating 8-under 62 in the afternoon
session of Saturday’s double-round. Perkins closed with a 1-over 71.
Heading a group of three players tied for fourth place at
3-under 207, a shot behind Florida’s Axelson, was Penn State’s Ryan Davis, a
senior leader for the Nittany Lions from Berkeley Heights, N.J. Davis, winner
of the 2018 Met Amateur at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J., fired his second
straight 2-under 68 to get it to 3-under for the weekend.
Joining Davis at 207 were Jacksonville’s Eduardo Corrette, a
senior from Mexico, and Coastal Carolina senior Zack Taylor, who finished in a
tie for fourth place in the 2014 PIAA Championship as a senior at Baldwin.
Corrette closed with a 2-under 68 while Taylor matched par in the final round
with a 70.
Liberty’s Jonathan Yaun, a sophomore from Minneola, Fla.,
finished strong with a 3-under 67 and was alone in seventh place, a shot behind
the trio tied for fourth at 2-under 208.
Georgia Southern’s Ben Carr, a sophomore from Columbus, Ga.,
got it going in the final round with a 5-under 65 as he finished alone in
eighth place at 1-under 209. Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Gray, a sophomore from
Lugoff, S.C., landed on even-par 210 and finished alone in ninth place after
closing with a 1-over 71.
Backing up Davis for Big Ten representative Penn State was
his fellow senior Alec Bard of New Hartford, N.Y. and junior Lou Olsakovsky,
who starred scholastically at Upper St. Clair, both of whom finished among the
group tied for 24th place at 5-over 215.
Bard closed with a 1-over 71 after posting a pair of 2-over
72s in Saturday’s double-round. Olsakovsky closed with a 1-over 71.
Penn State got a third 1-over 71 in Sunday’s final round
from junior Lukas Clark, a former Council Rock South standout who finished in
the group tied for 44th place at 9-over 219.
Rounding out the Penn State lineup was James McHugh, a
junior from Rye, N.Y. who finished among the group tied for 52nd
place at 221 after closing with a 75.
The Nittany Lions are off to a strong start to the spring
portion of the wraparound 2019-’20 season as this weekend’s tie for third came
after a runnerup finish in last weekend’s Big Ten Match Play Championship.
The Liberty lineup included junior Zach Barbin, the oldest
of the golfing Barbins of Elkton, Md. Barbin closed with a second straight 76
and finished alone in 70th place at 226.
After being in relationship with Wilson for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that don’t believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I meant a spell caster called Dr Zuma zuk and I email him, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there.
