Andrew Miller of Bryn Mawr battled 40-mph wind gusts to fire
a 4-over-par 75 on the Seaview Hotel and Golf Club’s Bay Course in Galloway
Township, N.J. to take the lead after the opening round in the older boys
division as the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) and the Philadelphia Section
PGA Junior Tour (PJT) joined forces for the HJGT/PJT Junior Championship
Saturday.
Miller matched the card on the back nine of the 6,342-yard Bay
Course with nine pars in an even-par 34 as he took a one-shot lead over Keller
Mulhern, coming off a solid freshman campaign at Malvern Prep, in the combined
HJGT 14-to-18/PJT 13-to-18 division. Mulhern carded a 5-over 76 over the
6,602-yard Pines Course.
I’m guessing players will play the opposite of the two
courses that they played Saturday in Sunday’s final round. The event drew a
strong field of 145 players with many top juniors from the Philadelphia area
being joined by guys and gals from up and down the East Coast.
Lasse Lehmann of Manahawkin, N.J. was another shot behind
Mulhern with a 77 he carded at the Bay Course. I don’t have all the course
breakdowns as to whom played which course, but I’ll try to note them when I
have them.
St. Joseph’s Prep’s Joseph Morganti, a junior from
Havertown, and Michael Mitnick of Linwood, N.J. finished in a tie for fourth
place, each carding a 78.
Matthew Lafond of Blue Bell and Stephen Lorenzo of Lower
Gwynedd, both juniors on La Salle’s Philadelphia Catholic League and District
12 Class AAA championship team, headed a group of five players tied for sixth
at 79, which rounded out the top 10.
Lafond and Lorenzo were joined at that figure by Radnor High
sophomore Tyler Tornoe, Jack Ross of Medford Lakes, N.J. and Unionville phenom
Win Thomas.
The 11-to-13 division was pretty much exclusive to the HJGT
guys in that age group who ventured to the Jersey Shore and Hunter Po of
Bridgewater, N.J. grabbed the lead with a 6-over 77 that featured a pair of
birdies. Earl Riegger of Potomac, Md. is a shot behind Po in second after
carding a 78.
Maximus Liu of Union, N.J. is in third place with an 81, Giancarlo
DiLeo of Lido Beach, N.Y. is fourth with an 85 and Andrew Flynn of Monroe,
Conn. is fifth with an 87.
Luke Huang of Great Neck, N.Y. and Andrew Liu of Clinton,
N.J. are tied for sixth after each posted an 88. Owen Saad of Fair Haven, N.J.
is eighth with a 92, Austin Barrett of Farmingville, N.Y. is ninth with a 103
and Jeremy Cammayo of River Vale, N.J. rounded out the top 10 as he is alone in
10th with a 107.
Esther Park of Wilmington, Del. carded a solid 5-over 76 to
take a two-shot lead in the girls HJGT 14-to-18/PJT 13-to-18 division. Park,
one of a trio of Delaware teens who finished second in the final edition of the
USGA Women’s State Team Championship in the fall of 2017 at The Club at Las
Campanas’ Sunrise Course in Santa Fe, N.M., birdied the par-3 12th
hole.
Caraline Oakley of Southampton, N.Y. posted a 78 at the
Pines Course to sit two shots behind Park in second. Hartley Zook of
Flemington, N.J. is third with an 80. The trio of Isabella McCloskey of
Princeton Junction, N.J., Julia McLaughlin of Princeton, N.J. and Sydney Nethercott
of Greenwich, Conn. shared fourth place, each carding an 84.
Kayla Gutierrez of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. and Madison
Barber of Canada are tied for seventh, each landing on 85. Rounding out the top
10 were two players – Ashley Liu of Team Liu of Clinton, N.J. and Olivia Strigh
of Hammonton, N.J. – tied for ninth at 87.
Leading the way in the girls HJGT under-13 division is
Kennedy Swedick of Altamont, N.Y. who fired an 80 that featured a birdie on the
par-3 fourth hole. Trailing Swedick by two shots is Sawyer Brockstedt of
Rehoboth Beach, Del., who carded an 82.
It’s eight more shots behind Brockstedt back to Lia Huang of
Great Neck, N.Y. in third with a 90. Hannah Rabb of Watsontown is fourth after
a 92, Renna Chang of Jericho, N.Y. is fifth with a 94, Sammi Yeslavage of
Doylestown is sixth with a 98, Catherine Andino of Port Washington, N.Y. is
seventh with a 101 and Jillian Burks of Paoli is seventh with a 103.
Mihir Roperia of Cranbury, N.J. leads the HJGT boys under-10
division with a 76 that included a birdie on the par-5 third hole. A 76 for 18
holes in tough conditions by a kid under 10 is pretty strong.
Colby Baran of Wading River, N.Y. is the runnerup after an
84, Nicky Jadav of Latham, N.Y. is third with a 98 and Kyler Madden of
Titusville is fourth with a 133.
Tommy Marshall of Marlton, N.J. carded a 47 on the front
nine of the Bay Course to grab a three-shot lead among the PJT nine-holers.
Jolie Pastorick of Rydal sits in second, three shots behind
Marshall after a 50. Sean Curran of Newtown Square is third with a 52 and
Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J. is fourth with a 53.
